相変わらず、どこから話せばいいのやら。
まず、キャビンを建てる場所。
長野県にある、野尻湖がある信濃町。

とてもいいところですよ。夏は涼しいし、野尻湖は結構有名ですよね。
ここにある、国際村という、まー要するに別荘地です。
私は幼い頃の夏休みは毎年ここで過ごしていました。
綺麗でしょ？
国際村は昔から外国人（主に宣教師など）が夏過ごしていた別荘地です。
お金がない宣教師用の軽井沢みたいなものかな？
私の祖父母も宣教師で、私の父も幼い頃から、夏はここで過ごしていました。
そんな私の家族３代が使っていた、別荘というか山小屋というか、
残念ながら３年前に火事で全焼してしまったのです。
私たちのキャビンは本当にラフな感じで、
電話もない、テレビもない、飲み水も汲みにいかないといけないし、
２階から木の床の穴を通して１階を覗ける（これでよくスパイゲームで遊んでました）、
虫が入ってくる穴だらけで、激しく飛び回ったら、ギシギシいって、揺れるような、
そんな古いキャビンでした。
でも私にとってはこれ以上にないくらい、居心地がよくって、素敵なキャビンでした。
キャビンは燃えてしまった頃、私はアメリカに住んでいました。
両親もキャビンを立て直すより、隣にあるキャビンを直して、そっちに移りました。
そして去年、私と主人が日本に帰ってきて、
将来の自給自足の夢とか、家を建てたいと言う目標を両親に話していたら、
野尻の土地がまだ空いてるよー、そこに家を建てる？土地は５円で譲るよー、ワッハハ！！
と面白がって話してきました。
私たちは別荘を建てようと思っていないし、将来野尻で自給自足する予定もなかったし、
お金も別荘を建てるために貯めてきている訳でもない。
だから、あっははー、そんなバカな！とその時は笑い飛ばしていました。
でも数ヶ月が経ち、その土地も手放さなきゃいけなくなることを知り、真剣に考えました。
まず、その土地は私の家族にとって、歴史もあり、情もある。
土地が５円って、他にはあり得ない！
将来家を建てるためのいい勉強と経験になる。
夏の東京は地獄そのもの。主人の両親も夏が涼しく過ごせる場所を求めてる。
こんなチャンスは滅多にない！！
将来の目標とはちょっと違うけど、寄り道としては悪くない。
まだ旅はしたいけど、最終的に野尻で自給自足も可能。
建てちゃえば、誰かは絶対使える。後悔はしない。
そう思い、決断をしたわけです。

My family has a long history at Nojiri. My grandparents were missionaries and they
first got our cabin up there, who . My father spent his childhood summers there, and so did I.
For three generations we spent our summers in this rustic
that sweaked and shook when we ran up the stairs, no telephone,
no tv, lots of bugs, a fireplace for smores, a lake nearby for swimming, tennis, golf
... basically the best kind of summer cabin a child could ask for.
Unfortunately, we lost our cabin to a fire 3 years ago.
At the time I was in the US, and my parents decided to buy the cabin next door.
So, our lot had remained empty.
This year, when I came back to Japan, I talked to my parents about my future goals
about living in the country someday, of living sustainably, and building our own home.
They jokingly mentioned the empty lot in Nojiri, and said we can have it for 5cents.
However, I had no plans to build a cabin in a summer resort.
It's a great place, but not the kind of enviornment that we envision in our future.
We want to have a place wehere we can garden to grow food, have chickens,
... you know. The whole shabang.
However, a few months later, I heard my family will lose their rights to the lot.
I seriously rethought this situation.
Where else in the world do you get a peice of land for 5cents?
(of course there are strings attached.. but those are just details)
Tokyo in the summer is hell, so my husbands parents were also interested.
It would be a great learning experience for us, and the land means a lot to our family.
Although we don't know where we will eventually settle, Nojiri can always be a Plan B.
All in all, it seems like it was worth the investment, and so we jumped onto this oppurtunity.
Of course, we are on a tight budget, and it is kind of like a pit stop in our journey
of searching for a sustainable lifestlye, but all experiences are meaningful,
and what's life without a few pit stops.
