野尻も梅雨が明けたらしく、すっかり暑い日が続きます。
毎日昼間はカンカンに晴れて、午後からは雷雲ができ、大雨になったりして、道は相変わらずボロボロです。
野尻でも昼間は30度を超え、溶けそうになるけど、夕方から涼しくなり、夜はやっぱりちょっと肌寒いくらいの快適なここの気候を大満喫しています。

The rainy season has supposedly passed and the summer weather and heat have arrived full on. It's super nice (and hot) during the day, but in the afternoons the thunder clouds develop and we often get pouring rain that washes away the gravel roads, making them worse and worse to drive on. But it's nice that the weather cools down in the afternoon and it's quite chilly at night so we can still snuggle in our blankets without sweating to death like in the cities.

そんなチャウの写真を撮りながら、ゆっくり散歩を楽しんでいたある午後、突然国際村の図書室がある建物の中から ”おい、お前ら、今なにしている？暇か?”と大きな声が・・・国際村に住む山男のおじ様たちが図書室の整理をしていた。
一度捕まったら、もう逃げられない。おとなしく図書室の整理を手伝った。
So one day as I was taking silly pictures of Chow during our walk, suddenly I hear a "Hey!! What are you guys doing? Are you busy??" We came across the NLA library and a couple of hard working members re-sorting all the books. We didn't have any reason not to, so we helped them out.

これは整理した後の写真。ほぼすべての本の順番がぐちゃぐちゃでものすごいホコリとカビだらけだったのをなんとかここまで整理した。国際村が始まったのが80年以上前で、この本の中にもかなり年期がはいっているものがたくさんあった。一冊60円の本だったり、1950年の子育ての本とか。本っていくら古くてもなかなか捨てられない。誰も読まないだろう本でも、なにか価値があるような気がする。その本が書かれた時代の時間がそのまま止まって、その本に残されているような、そんな感じ。
This picture was taken after we cleaned up. All the books were out of order and everything was covered in dust and mold, but we were able to put it all into pretty good shape. There is a long history of NLA that shows through these books. Books that has a price tag of just 60 cents, a guide to parenting written in the 1950s... It's hard to throw books away, they are like a token from the past and even if it seems like noone will read some of the books, it's not easy to get rid of books with such history.

先週末はたくさんのお客様が来た。週末は船で一緒だったまだ学生さんの若い二人。みんなでご飯作って、夜はウクレレやギターで声をマックスに出して歌を歌ったり（まだ近所いないから）、昼間は地元のジャム屋さんのお手伝いとか、湖に泳いだりとかで結構遊びまくった。本当は畑の草取りや、家も窓拭きなどやらせて、こき使おうと思っていたのに、楽しくって遊ぶのに夢中になっちゃいました。
Last week we had a couple of young friends who we travelled with come visit us. Originally, I had planned to use their young energy to help me pull weeds in the garden and clean the windows and such, but we were so busy having fun there was no time for work. During the day we helped a local jam-maker make jam, we swam in the lake and just was busy enjoying the outdoors. At night we cooked together and sang along to Daisuke ukulele.

その後、大ちゃんのおばあちゃんたちが来て、このあたりの観光をした。あまり観光っぽいことやったことなかったから結構おもしろかった。特に私が興奮したのは小布施にあった光の美術館。昔から現代まで、日本人が使っていた明かりを展示してあったんだけど、そこで昔の人が使っていた油のたんころとか、ろうそくとか。前からどんな油を燃やしていたのか気になっていて、この美術館でいろいろ知ることができた。実は、油はなんでもいいんだよね。植物性の油や動物の脂、いろいろ燃料にして、ずーと生活をしていたんだな。美術館で井草（昔たんころの芯になったもの）を売っていたから、買って、さっそく家で古いオリーブオイルを燃料に燃やしてみた。こんな簡単なものなんだーっと当たり前かもしれないけど、私にはとても新鮮で素晴らしく思えた。
Next Daisuke's grandmother and her sister came to visit so we took them to do more touristy stuff. We really haven't been to a lot of the touristy places so it was fun for us too. One place I really enjoyed was the Light Museum in Obuse. It displayed all the types of lighting tools used in the history of Japan. I always wondered what oil they burned in oil lamps back in the day, and I was able to learn a lot at the museum. Actually, they burned all kinds of oil. I guess if it is oil, it will burn, from vegetable oil to animal fat. They sold the old fashion wicks (a type of grass also used for tatami) so I bought some and tried making a oil lamp out of old olive oil and it was beautiful. The simplicity of it may be common sense, but to me it was a new and exciting experience to burn that simple light.

今夜は久しぶりに二人の静かな夜。
大介はウクレレ弾いたり、私は水彩画を描いてみたり(ブログを書いたり）。
毎日がやりたいことがたくさんあって、
一緒にいたい人がたくさんいて、
いい夏になりそうだ！
Tonight we are spending our usual quiet evenings
as Daisuke practices his ukulele and I draw some watercolor pictures (and write my blog).
With so many things we want to do
and so many people we want to spend time with,
I get a good feeling that it's going to be a nice summer.

登山・妙高山 Climbed Myoko Mtn

昨日は妙高を登った。

前からこの辺の山を登りたいと思っていたのだけど、

早起きは苦手な私たちはなんとなく機会を

逃してきた。

でも昨日は梅雨中でも天気予報が

晴れ！晴れ!晴れ!

仕事も片付いたし、絶対行くことにした。

Yesterday we climbed Mt. Myoko.

We have been meaning to climb the many mountains

in this region for a long time,

but both of us are terrible at getting out butts out of

bed in the mornings and we have been missing our chances.

However, the weather report was sunny all day (rare during rainy season) so we set our minds to finally go.

でも当日、やっぱり朝寝坊・・・
予定より3時間遅れての出発になった。
家から登山口がある笹ヶ峰まで、車で一時間ほど。
くねくねした道を登る途中、サルを何匹か見かけて、
写真撮りたかったけど、大ちゃんが凶暴だから
やめておけというので、あきらめた。
笹ヶ峰に着けば、びっくりするくらい晴天できれいな景色が待っていた。（最初の写真）

As expected, we overslept in the morning and left the house 3 hours behind schedule. It's about an hour drive to the trail entrance in Sasagamine, and we saw a few monkeys on the way. Japanese monkeys are cute but known to be vicious so we didn't stop for pictures.
Upon arriving at Sasagamine we were surrounded by beautiful scenery and perfect weather.

最初の方は結構平らで、らくちん、るんるん気分で登っていたら、途中から12曲がりという試練が待ち構えていた。爺返しと婆返しがあると本に書いてあったけど、この12曲がりはソフィア返しになりそうだった。岩の登るのはまだ楽しいけど、以外と階段がちゃんと設備されているほうが、私はしんどい。
私の父が若かった頃、夜中にスイカ担いで妙高の山頂で朝日を見てたと言っていたけど、この時私の父は超人だったんだなと思った。

The trail started out nice and easy until we reached the '12 corners' which was 12 turns and corners that were steep and endless. My father said he used to climb this mountain at night to see the sun rise from the top, carrying a watermelon to eat there... At this point I realized what a crazy youth my father must have been!

山の頂上に近づくとだんだん雪の量も多くなっていった。7月に入ってもこんなに雪が残ってるなんてびっくりした。名古屋や東京でヒーヒー言っている家族に持って帰りたいとおもったくらい。雪の上を通り抜ける涼しい風は本当に天然エアコンそのもの。

この写真の先の方に見えるのがだいちゃん。歩くのが早くって、私は着いて行くのに精一杯。って、こんなに離されたら、ついていけてないよね・・・

As we climbed higher, there were more and more piles of unmelted snow. It was surprising to see how much snow there was in July! I wished I could take some to my family in Tokyo and Nagoya who are suffering from the heat and humidity in the cities. What a pleasure it was to feel the cool breeze as the wind passed these piles of snow.

山の頂上は本当にまだ春になったばかりみたいで、山桜が咲いていた。(右の写真）
緑も新緑で、小さな花々がたくさん咲いていて、鳥がいっぱい鳴いていた。人もほとんどいなかったから、熊よけにラジオをつけようと思ったけど、鳥や虫や水や風の音が聞こえなくって、すぐに消した。その代わりたまにソフィアが熊さんに逃げてもらうように歌を歌ったけどね。
Toward the top of the mountain was just entering spring season and the cherry blossom trees was still blooming small flowers. The trees had their new greens sprouting and the birds sand happily around us. To avoid bears, I had brought a radio and turned it on, but turned it off quickly as it disturbed the wonderful sounds of birds, bugs and wind around us. Occasionally I would sing a song to let the bears know we were coming.

ここでお昼ご飯を食べた。うまかった～。

平日だから、本当に人も少なくって、

天狗の庭を二人占め。なんて贅沢なんでしょう。

足はくたくただったけど、気持ちは落ち着き、でも力が沸いてくるような

流行言葉でいうなら、まさにパワースポットだなっとおもった。

We had our lunch here and since it was a weekday there

was hardly anyone around so we had the whole place to ourselves.

Can't think of a better way to spend a Wednesday!

山登りは本当に楽しかった。

帰りはもうクタクタだったけど、また近いうちに山を登りたいと思う。

そのためにもちゃんと早起きの習慣身に着けなきゃ!!

Although I was exhausted at the end of the day,

it was so great to spend the day in the mountains.

We really hope to climb some more soon,

we just have to get in the habit of waking up earlier in the morning!!

梅雨

野尻に帰ってきて、2ヶ月が過ぎた。毎日寒くって薪ストーブを焚いていた春も終わり、やっと蒔いた種たちが芽を出し、ぐんぐん育ってきました。もう薪ストーブを焚いてないけど、ストーブは我が家のテレビ代わりなので、ちょっと夜が寂しいかも。でも、東京とか名古屋にいる人は、こんな火の写真も見たくないくらい最近は暑いそうで、そういう季節こそ、野尻にいてよかったと思う。暑いのは嫌いじゃ。
2 months has passed since returning to Nojiri. It's finally warmed up enoughthat we don't need to use our wood stove at night. Although I kind of miss watching the fire at night, our wood stove is our TV after all.

よく雨が降る野尻だから、梅雨なんて、すごーく降る。もう、大雨で道がぼろぼろになってます。昼間は大体ちょっと晴れてるけど、午後になると霧が入ってきて、気温がぐんと下がる。霧がすごい時は周りの森も見えなくなるくらい。

It's rainy season in Japan, and it rains a lot here in Nojiri, rainy season or not. So the pouring rain has really messed up the roads here. The none-cement roads are nice but the damage from the rain every year gets worse and its becoming kinda dangerous to drive on some of the roads in the mountain.
Even on sunny days, a thick fog comes in in the late afternoon or evening and the temperature drops significantly. Sometimes the fog is so thick we can't even see the forest right outside our window.
It's like living in a cloud, but comforting in a way.

船を下りて、あの大忙しの日々の時間の流れから、野尻の生活の時間の流れのペースの戻るまで、ちょっと戸惑いもあったけど、今はだいぶ落ち着いた。
なんやかんやでこの2ヶ月もいろいろあったし。弟の結婚式をここでやり、その準備をする前に、近所のお爺さん、おばあさんの薪割りを手伝っていたら、ぎっくり腰になり、1週間くらい動くのが辛かったり。大介が東京行ったり、私も出稼ぎに東京に行ったり。畑もずーと寒くって芽が出なかったのも、最近はぐんぐん野菜も育ち始めた。家では毎日料理して、保存食のレパートリーを広げようとしている。ジャムはよく作るけど、ルバーブのシルップ漬けとか、遊びに来てくれたLとつくったミントシロップとか、梅干とか。梅干は今年初めての挑戦。うまくいくといいけど。

Ever since getting off the hectic life on the boat, I struggled a bit to get back to my slower rhythm here in Nojiri, but I am starting to get settled down again.
A lot has happened in the last 2 months. My twin brother's wedding was held here, and although we were busy preparing for it, I threw my back the week before helping some elder folk stock wood and I could barely move for a week or so. I now have endless sympathy for anyone with a bad back.
I have also been trying to increase the amount of preserved food we make. I make a lot of jam, and also learned how to keep rubarb sticks in a syrup (nice and crunchy), made mint syrup out of my mint forest in my garden and am now working on making umeboshi (sour plums). Hopefull it goes well.

とにかく、焦らないようにしている。
あれも、これもで、本当にいろいろあるけど、
自然の中にいるんだから、自然の時間の流れもちゃんと感じれるように、
深呼吸をして、観察して、ゆっくり、冷静に過ごしたい。
突っ走ろうと焦る未熟な私をチャウチャウも教えてくれる。
そんなに急がなくっていいんだよって。

There seems to be so much that I want to do, need to do or should do.
But I am trying not to rush. Being surrounded by nature, what is the point if I don't appreciate nature's rhythm? If I don't stop and breathe the fresh air and observe my surroundings? When I start feeling a sense of urgency and uncertainty, my dog is around to remind me,
it's okay to take it slow.

ブログ再開？～ A new start!

大丈夫かいな・・・

またまた、ご無沙汰してます！
なにせ、気まぐれブログですから、
今日みたいに外が嵐で、大介が東京で、一人で暇な時にやっと書く気になる、相変わらずマイペースなんです。

私たち夫婦は1ヶ月ほど前に長野に戻ってきました。冬の間は盛りだくさんの旅を続けていたので、帰ってきて、なにかホッとしています。

冬の間どこに行っていたかというと、まず、ハワイで友達の家作りのお手伝いに一ヶ月ほど。その後は名古屋に里帰りしたり、沖縄で寒い思いしたりして、また1ヶ月ほど。

そして、1月から4月の間はピースボートでボランティア通訳として、世界一周しました。
さすがの私たちも少々旅疲れをした冬でした。そのたくさんの旅の間のたくさんの出来事をちょくちょく思い出しながら、ブログにも書いていこうと思います。

It's been a while (again) since my last post, but it's really only days like today when it's stormy outside and Daisuke is in Tokyo, that I am motivated enough to write!

We returned to our cozy cabin last month after a quite eventful winter, which started with a month in Hawaii helping a friend build a house, visiting family in Nagoya, freezing our butts off in Okinawa and then finally from January to April, we went onboard the Peace Boat as volunteer interpreters for a trip around the world. I hope to post pictures and write more about our travels on this blog (perhaps on another rainy day).

このブログも本当は家作りも完成したし、それでこのブログは終わりでいいやって思っていたけど、実は私たちが目指している生活とか、やろうとしていることの中で家作りはほんの最初の一歩で、始まりでしかない。持続可能な生活がしたくって始めた訳だから、その生活自体が本当の私たちの活動の中心のはず。だから、ブログの名前も変えて、ブログを再スタートして、私たちが体験していること、学んでいるころ、感じていること、自然な暮らしの楽しさ、そういうものをみんなとシェアできたらいいなーと思い、またブログもがんばってみます。

私たちは世界一周している間、日本は大きな転換期を迎えた気がします。日本だけじゃなくって、世界がって言うべきかな。いつかは変わらなきゃいけない、今までの持続不可能な生活を大変な自然災害と人災である原子力発電所の事故が、これからの生活がどうあるべきかを考える大きなきっかけになっていると思う。

そんな中、やっぱり暮らしをもっとシンプルにしていく事は必要不可欠だと思う。シンプルにしたくなくっても、そうしなければいけない世の中になっていくかもしれない。でも、私たちが伝えたいことは、シンプルな暮らし＝不便で我慢の生活じゃなくって、シンプル＝楽しくって、工夫して充実した生活だと思うこと。自分にとって大切なものがなんなのかを明白化して、それを中心に、そして無駄なものをなくしていく。そうするだけでも自分の周りにいらないものがたくさんあり、不必要なことに時間をたくさん使っていることに気づくかもしれない。それがSimplification（単純化）の始まりだと思う。

例えば、私にとって大事なもの。それは大介、チャウ（愛犬）と過ごす時間。環境を大事にして自然に近い生活をすること。

これが私の中心。

これだけ維持していくのは難しいことじゃない。物もお金もあんまりいらない。必要なのは時間と環境とその生活を維持するための少しのお金をものだけ。ただそれだけ。

なにもかもが複雑で、世界には問題が多すぎるような気がして、どうしようもない気持ちになりやすい今の世の中だからこそ、わたしはSimplificationを求めるんだと思う。そしてその中で確実に今は幸せと充実した日々を過ごしていること。感謝感謝です。

なんか、やたらと語っちゃったけど、私が言いたいのは私は希望を持っているということ。日本が、世界がこれから良い方に変わっていく。そしてそれが私たち一人一人の小さな、シンプルなことから始まるって思うこと。です。

To be honest, I initially thought that since our cabin building is (mostly) complete, that I was quite finished with this blog as well. However, the house building was really just the first step of our goal to live a more sustainable life. Actually, our lifestyle and what we learn from now on about sustainable living is really what is more important. So, I have changed the title of the blog and have decided to re-start this blog with hopes that we can share what we learn, what we feel and what we enjoy in our everyday simple life.

While we were floating on the boat and travelling the world, Japan was hit by a tremendous disaster and in a sense has been forced to re-examine itself. The natural disaster and the man-made disaster of the nuclear power plant that followed has been a kind of wake-up call that things cannot go on the way they have.

In this current age, I (of course) think that the key is to simplify. Even if people don't want to, a time may come when we have no choice but to. But simplifying life does not mean that life becomes inconvenient and lacking. Actually, I strongly believe that it becomes more fruitful while you come up with creative ways to change things and make everyday life meaningful. At least, this has been the case for me.

I think that it's because I feel that we live in an overcomplicated world with too many problems to even begin to comprehend and resolve that I seek simplification. To really reexamine things and find what is most important. In my case, it is spending time with Daisuke and ChowChow and living a life that is not harmful to nature, which I cherish and love being near to. This is what is central to me and to achieve these things is not so complicated and difficult. All it requires is time and the right environment; not a lot of money and certainly not a lot of things. And by seeking these things and ridding myself of things I don't need, at least for now, I am living a pretty happy and fruitful daily life. I have a lot to be thankful for.

I am not trying to be preachy, (although I kind of ended up so). What I want to say is that I'm hopeful. Hopeful that Japan and the world will change for the better, and that change begins with the small and simple changes we make in our lives.

家作り完成！ Cabin Finished!

なが～～い間、ご無沙汰しておりますが

（そしてずいぶん前の話になっちゃいますが）

キャビン作り、（ほぼ）終わりました!!

今年の夏はすっかり、快適生活を野尻で過ごして、

すっかりブログのことを放置していました。

Although I have left this blog to collect dust

(not that there is dust online...)

and it has been a while since the time I should have posted this....

The cabin in now (mostly) finished!!

Daisuke and I have been so comfortably enjoying living in it

since this spring that I have completely forgotten to report it.

外からの写真。

ちゃんとベランダも完成してます。

Here is the picture from the outside.

You can see the porch is completed!

まさに山小屋。今年は家作りが終わっていたため、

山の幸をいろいろと楽しめた。

狐も狸もふくろうもムササビも、たくさんの動物がいて、

今年は何回か熊も出ました(見てないけど）。

小さい頃は熊の心配はすることなかったけど、

熊さんたちも行き詰まってて可哀想です。

Very much a cottage in the woods,

because we completed the cabin quite early

we had a lot of time to enjoy the woods around us this year.

We saw foxes, racoons, owls, flying squirrels and many other animals

that share the mountain with us.

ベランダはチャウを含めて、我が家のお気に入りの場所。

天気がいい日はここでゴロゴロします。

The porch is one of Chow's favorite spots, and of course ours too.

On sunny days we enjoy just sitting out here and doing nothing :)

さて、玄関を開けたら、まずリビングです。

ソファはニトリだけど、それ以外の家具は自分たちで作ったかもらったもの。

コーヒーテーブルはお風呂にしたウィスキー樽の上の部分。

Now to guide you to the inside.

First, the living room. Other than our sofa, we made most

of the funiture ourselves. The coffee table is the top of the whiskey barrel

we use for our bath tub.

本とか写真とか薪とか、いろいろの置き場所。

燃えてしまった前のキャビンの写真も飾ってます。

でも、なるべく物を増やさないようにしないとね・・・

The other side of the living room

is made into a place to put photos, books, wood, etc.

We even have an old photo of the previous cabin that burned down.

そして、薪ストーブ！！

薪ストーブが入った時はテンションあがったな～。

しかも知り合いが使っていないからと

ほぼ新品状態でいただいちゃいました!

感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

そして薪ストーブで火を焚くと

ぽかぽかで幸せでいっぱい。

In the center of our cabin is the wood stove.

It is hard to put in words the sense of excitement we felt

when we put the stove in our cabin.

Our good friend gave us their (mostly unused) wood stove

as a house warming gift.

And boy does it ever warm up the house!!!

I cannot express how thankful I am.

テーブルは以前紹介した、頂いた木を磨いて作ったもの。

椅子はIkeaです。ちょうどいい高さがあって、本当によかったー

お客さんが来るとちょっと狭いけどね。

気に入ってるから、いいんだ。

The table I introduced in a previous post,

but I will mention it again, because it is an awesome piece of wood.

Plus, we found stools of the perfect height at Ikea.

大介がソフィアのリクエスト通りに作ってくれた、

炊飯機が載っているところは取り出し可能で、

アイランドテーブルになる優れもの。

ここのカウンターでパン作りとかしたりするのが理想。

Daisuke made these kitchen shelves exactly as I requested

and everything fits perfectly.

The shelf on the left is actually a pull out island table

for use when we need more table space.

Quite genius, really.

キッチン。料理は二人とも好きなので、

使いやすく棚は全部引き出せるようになってます。

The kitchen itself is also all hand made.

We both enjoy cooking so all the shelves are

designed so that it pulls out and is easy to use.

廊下です。絵と山の花を飾ってます。

廊下には太陽があまり当たらないので、

収穫したジャガイモとかも置いています。

（ので、あまり全体の写真を撮らなかった･･あは）

We put a couple paintings and wild flowers I picked

on the hallway wall for decoration.

I keep potatoes that we harvested in this

shaded and cool hallway (so don't look down)

お風呂場。

実はまだ未完成。水周り問題がまだ心配なので、まだ調節中。

だから樽風呂にはまだあまり入ってない。

残念だけど、楽しみにとっておいてます。

The bath & shower room.

Actually this room is still not finished.

We are worried about some water issues,

so we actually haven't been able to use the barrel bath much.

Something to look forward to next year.

そして、ちゃんとトイレにもドアがつきましたよ。

(しばらくなかったので、お客さんびっくり状態）

And we finally put a door on the bathroom.

Now guests don't have to be afraid to visit!

便所でございます。

ここが以外と落ち着くスペースのひとつ。

ろうそくつけて、ゆっくり読書しながら・・・

なんて、兄弟の多い私たち二人は昔から、

静かな自分の時間がほしい時はトイレにこもっていたので、

未だにその癖があるようです。

The bathroom is also one of the

relaxing places in the house.

We have candles and books and the

it is made to be nice and cozy.

We both grew up in relatively large families

so our habit of escaping for alone time in the bathroom

still seems to be with us.

洗面所です。ここの棚も大介が作ってくれました。

壁もちょっとまだ未完成なのは、

綺麗な合板を探しているからです。

（あと生活始めると作業が進まなくなるからです・・・でへ）

And the washing area.

Daisuke also made this shelf.

The wall is slightly unfinished because we are looking

for the right and clean wood for it

(and because once you start living in a house

it's hard to get yourself to work on it...)

そして、最後にロフト。

小さい頃からの憧れの屋根裏の部屋。

窓の隣にベッドを置いたらから、夜は星も見えるし、

朝は鳥や虫観察しながら、いつまでもごろごろ。

小さい頃の憧れの部屋は自分で作るべし。

And lastly, our loft and beloved resting place.

Since I was a child I always dreamed of a room

in the attic by a window.

At night I can see the stars and in the morning

I watch the birds and bugs while refusing to get out of bed.

No better way to get your dream room

than to make it yourself.

そんな感じで我が家は（ほぼ）完成しました。

本当にたくさんの人たちの助けのおかげで建てられました。

心の底から感謝しています。

家作りで思ったこと。

ひとつ、やってみると意外とできちゃうもの。

予算も最初は無理だろうと言う人もいたけど、余裕で予算内に済んだし、

まったくの初心者でもやろうと決めたら何とかなる。

ふたつ、たくさんの人の助けのおかげ。

まったく一人でできちゃう人もいるのかもしれないけど、

私たちの場合は本当にたくさんの人たちの

協力と支えのおかげで楽しい家作りができた。

廃材の提供も、アドバイスも、励ましも、

手伝いに来てくれた人も、

本当にみんなのおかげです。

ありがとうございました！

最後に、家作り、またやりたいと思います。

この経験で得た知識、まだやってみたいと思うことも

沢山ある。

なんらかの形で、家作り、物づくり、繋がり作り、

環境のことを考えて、未来のことを考えて、

そして充実した楽しい毎日が送れるように

これからも頑張りたい。

ので、

これからも、たまにこのブログをアップするかもしれませんので、

大雨 Rain Storm

外は大雨です。

また砂利道が流されて、軽トラが運転しにくくなっちゃう・・・

とほほ。

でも今は訳あって、一人野尻でお留守番してます。

ので、この激しい雨音にちょっと励まされてたりしてます。

嵐とか好きなんだよね。

なんかわくわくするような、

落ち着くような・・・

ちょっと変人かもしれないけど。

今日はなんとなくブログを書こうと思って、

家のことは書くことあるけど、

なんと、カメラの写真を削除してしまって、

アップしたい内容の写真がないのです。

夫ががんばっていろんな物を作っている過程の

写真を消してしまって・・・

すまん、夫よ!

でも、なんでこうブログを更新するのが苦手なのだろう。

気がついたら一ヶ月とか過ぎちゃうんだもんなー。

なんでかなー。

怠け者だから？

それを言っちゃおしめーよ!

まー、こんな感じで、一人でいると

変なテンションになるんです。

さて、せっかくなので、

なにか写真をアップしましょう。

この前大ちゃんの髪を切りました。

そしておもしろい写真が撮れたので、アップします。

見事に顔が同じ位置だから、

髪の変化がよく分かる。

これを見てると一時間くらい笑える。

ちなみにこれが切る前の写真。

作業の写真を消された上、

その代わりにブログのネタにまでされて、

本当にすまない！夫よ！

そして、はやく野尻帰ってきてくれ～!

ついに梅雨入りしましたね。外は大雨です。

今日3時間以上かけて作った畝、流されたかなー（はぁ～）・・・

沖縄は梅雨明けしたって、

だから今年の梅雨は短いのかな？

そしたら、もう夏だもんね。早いわー。

Pouring rain outside tonight.

I just spent hours plowing rows in our garden

and its probably all being washed away now...

Sigh...

そんなわけで(どんなわけじゃ？）

ブログはアップしてないけど、

主人は歯が腫れるまで頑張って作業を進めてるため、

キャビンはほとんど完成!

ちょっとずつ（いい加減に）、紹介しますね。

But, besides my complaining,

Daisuke has done a lot of work on the cabin

and actually we are practically done!

It's just that I'm behind on the blog....

go figure...

これは、なにやらヒノキ材で工作してますね。

いったい何を作っているのかな?

Daisuke is making something with 1x4s.

Can you guess what?

こんな感じに仕上がりました。

なんかの棚ですな？

おお！なんと、洗面所の棚ですな!

これで、歯ブラシやら、石鹸やら綺麗に収納できます！

キッチン同様、壁は仕上げないで、

小さい家の収納スペースとして、有効活動しております。

棚の裏を薄い合板みたいなので仕上げたけど、

周りがまだ未完成ですな。

これでは、洗面所完成!!っとは言えませんね。

また、材料が揃う（見つかる？）まで、待つしかないですね。

でも、洗面所としてとても使いやすくなりましたよ！！

We put the shelf inside the wall, like the kitchen

to save space, but the surrounding area

is still not finished.

But! We at least we have a place to brush our teeth!

自分で言うのもアレだけど、

最近は雨ばっかりです。

しかもめっちゃ寒い･･･今夜は4度くらいだと思う。

嘘じゃないです。

あ～なんか冬に逆戻りだ～。

太陽が恋しいよーー!!!!

そんな時はブログで些細な幸せをくれた物を紹介しようと思う。

こういう時は些細な幸せを思い出して、元気を出すのが肝心だ。

It's raining everyday... really... everyday.

Plus it's super cold. I think it's 4 degrees C outside.

Are we still in New Zealand? Is it almost winter and not summer?

I think not, but it sure feels like it.

At times like this it is important to remember the

small things in life that make you happy.

So, I will introduce a few here.

母が書いてくれた、リスの絵のポスト。

本当に上手で、家の玄関に本物のリスがいるみたい。

可愛くって、おしゃれで、見てると心が弾む。

Such a simple thing as a post box

turns into an adorable piece of art and I am

so happy to have it at the entrance of our home.

古い椅子を近所の人にもらった。

国際村の多くの古いキャビンに置かれているこの椅子は

昔宣教師達が大量輸入したものらしい。

ニトリの前の時代ですね。

でも昔の物って物持ちがいいよね。

An old chair given to us by a neighbor.

This chair is found in many of the old cabins

here in Nojiri.

Apparently, before Japan was overflowing with

cheap funiture and $1 stores, the missionaries imported

a bunch of these chairs from overseas.

It's amazing how these old pieces of funiture stay in such good shape.

この椅子をちょっと磨いて、ステインを塗ったら

またかっこよく生まれ変わりました。

廃材など使う時の喜び、

それは廃材が宝に変わる瞬間です。

We sanded the chair and stained it,

and it's as good as new, if not better with its nice new color.

The joy of using scavenged materials comes

at the moment something no one wanted

becomes treasure to us.

ベッドが届きました！ベッド＝幸せです。

A bed!! Need I say more?

キッチンにライトを入れました。

ないならないで料理してたし、大して気にならなかったけど、

あると、こんなにもまな板とフライパンの中がはっきり見える！！

って感激です。

生活がまたちょっぴり裕福になりました。

We put in a kitchen light.

Before it, I cooked just the same without much trouble,

but once installed it's surprising how much better

I can see what I am actually cooking!!

Life just got a little bit more comfortable:)

そして最後に、

ここに住んでると季節が変わっていくのが日々

目で見れて、肌で感じれて、とても楽しい。

これは野尻に来て最初の頃の写真。

And last but not least,

when you are here, you can really see the

changing of the seasons.

This is a picture of when we first came here this spring

taken while we are sitting around on our porch.

そして数日後。

緑が毎日増えて行きます。

雨が降った後は、本当に葉っぱが喜んでいるかのように

色が鮮やかになり、どんどん緑が広がります。

A few days later.

Everyday the green just spreads and expands

and comes to life.

After it rains, you can especially see the difference.

そして、また数日後。

こんなにも緑が溢れています。

こんなに木々の命のエネルギーに溢れている場所、

そしてそれを家のベランダから毎日見ていられる。

これ以上の贅沢と幸せはないと思います。

And another few days later.

The forest just bursts into life everyday,

and it's amazing to watch it, just sitting on our porch.

What more happiness could anyone really ask for?

菜の花祭り Field Flowers

今日は雨でしたね。雨の日はなんとなくぼーとしてしまうけど、

この半丸窓から見る緑がすごく綺麗だからこういう天気も嫌じゃない。

なんか毎日変わる素敵な絵を飾っているみたいで、この窓は特に気に入ってる。

A rainy day today.

It's not like I don't know like rainy days,

but rainy days make me lazy. (or should I say even more lazy:) )

I do love the view of the forest from our half circle window though.

It's like a perfect piece of art that changes everyday.

先日飯山の菜の花を見に行った。

花が満開で、青空で本当に綺麗だった。

ので、写真をいっぱいアップします！

The other day we went to Iiyama where yellow field flowers

were in full bloom.

It was so beautiful with the blue sky and mountains

and the bright yellow flowers, I wanted to share the photos here.

去年と比べて花が満開になるのが随分遅かったけど、

今年もこの景色が見れてよかった。

The flowers bloomed a lot later this year compared to last,

but I was happy to see this scenery again this year.

廊下床とベランダ Hallwall floor and porch

着々と仕上げ作業を進める中、ゆっくり春を楽しんでもいます。

山菜のコゴミ、コシアブラ、タラノメも家の周りに沢山でてきて、

さっそく春の味覚をいただきました。

写真の夕飯、すごいご馳走で、感動の美味しさなんだけど、

なんと二人で合計49円しか材料費にかかってない。

山菜は家の周りで採ったもので、大根っと雑穀米は手伝った農家

でいただいたもので、魚のアラはスーパーで99円。

このメニューは次のお昼にもなったから、49円。

あ～田舎の飯は安くってうますぎだ~。

でも山菜を採る時はちゃんとマナーとルールは守ろうね。

家の周りの山菜の木が何本も欲張りな人に折られてたり、

もう、乱獲状態でとても悲しくなります。

春の味覚はありがたく、ちょっといただくのがベストと思う。

As we work on finishing up our cabin, we are also

enjoying the many gifts that spring brings.

The nice weather, the fresh flowers, the fresh green

on the trees, and the edible plants.

Above is a picture of our dinner including

tempura of the edible plants. Super delicious.

This meal only cost us about 49 cents for the both of us.

A local farmer we helped gave us some veggies and rice

and so the only cost was the fish, which was super

cheap since it sold the cut off parts.

But throw it all in a pressure cooker, and its a great meal!

まず最初の仕上げ作業は廊下の床です。

まだ合板が丸出し状態。

Some of the work we did recently was the hallwall floor.

The floor was still just the plywood with no finish.

使った材料はコルク。安くって、軽くって、やわらかくって、

なんと言ってもめっちゃ簡単。

見た目どおり、パズルみたいにひいていくだけ。

We used cork material for the floor.

It was cheap, light, soft and super easy to do.

As you can see, its just like a puzzle that you simply lay out.

仕上がりの写真。コルクの切れ目とか見えなくって

素敵でしょ?

踏み心地もよくって、見た目もすっきりして、大満足。

部分的に汚れても取替えが簡単だしね！

This is how it looks when complete.

I like how you can't see the places it is cut,

and its very soft and warm on the feet.

It looks great and we are very happy with our choice.

And, if a portion of it gets damaged, we can just replace that piece!

次はベランダ作りを紹介します。

まずなるべく長い２ｘ１０をドアのしたから数センチ

のところに打ち込む。

今日の作業は私のダディーが手伝ってくれました。

Next, we made the porch on a nice sunny day.

My father helped us too :)

First, we put in the longest 2x10 wood we could find

a few cm underneath where the door is.

両側に2x10を打ち込んだ後は、間のスペース分

の長さに切った２ｘ１０や２ｘ４を入れていく。

これもまた廃材で作ってるから、途中で

材料がなくなっちゃって、2つ目のドアまで、とりあえず

辿り着けなかったけど･･･

階段は以前作ってあったやつを綺麗にステインして、

固定する。下が土だから、平らにするのが大変だった。

After the 2x10s were up on both sides,

we cut the other pieces of 2x10s and 2x4s to

put in inbetween the boards for the porch floor.

We used scavanged wood again for this,

so we ran out of material mid way through.

We will just have to wait till we have more material

for us to be able to reach the second door by our porch...

完成はしてないけど、

出来上がった部分はこんな感じ。

やっとベランダができて、とても嬉しい。

ここで日向ぼっこするのも気持ちいいし、

雨の日もベランダに座って雨を見るのも楽しい。

We are very happy to have a porch

and its so nice to sit or lay on it during a pleasant day

or even watch the rain fall from here.

春の野尻 Nojiri in Spring

春になり、やっと野尻に戻ってきました。

こっちの春は東京より随分遅め。今、桜が満開です。

今年は桜を2度楽しめたのが嬉しいですね。

でも、こっちに着いてから最初の数日はまだ０℃とかで

寒かった~。

ダウンジャケットで生活して、

まだパイプが凍ってしまうから水もまだ通ってなくって、

ちょいと数日大変だった。

Spring is finally here and we are back in Nojiri.

Although cherry blossom season was 1 month ago in Tokyo

it is just peaking now in Nagano.

The weather is still cold, but its great

to see all the trees come to life.

これはキャビンのすぐ近くの大久保池で満開中の

水芭蕉。

こんなにちかくにこんなに水芭蕉が見れるのは

知らなかった･･･

来るたびに新しい発見がある。

This is a white arum flower that is in full bloom

right near our neighborhood.

I've been coming here for ages, and didn't know something like

this was just around the corner.

春の顔でもあるフキノトウ。

至るところに咲きまくってる。

去年はもっと暖かかったから、フキノトウより他の

山菜が多く目立ったけど、今年のフキノトウはすごい!

他の山菜もどんどん顔を出してきて、散歩が楽しいです。

The edible plants are popping up everywhere

again this year.

This is called a butterbur sprout and is well known

in Japan for being one of the first plants

to pop its head out of the snow and lets people know

that spring has arrived.

もちろんキャビンの作業もちょくちょく進めていますよ。

キッチンにはいろいろな食料を収納して、

先日ガスも通って、すっかり生活しやすなりました。

ストールはIkeaで買ってきて、二人で朝の光が

部屋に流れ込んでくる中、ここで座って、

お茶を飲むのがなんだか楽しい。

We have started work on the cabin of course,

We went Ikea shopping and found the perfect

stools for our kitchen.

It's fun just waking up and drinking tea at our

small wooden table.

まずやった作業の一つはロフトの壁を完成させること。

壁はこれが最後。

なんかここだけまだ断熱材も見えてて、すごく未完成だったから

やらなきゃいけない順位が高かった。

One of the first things we worked on was finishing the loft wall.

This was the only place that still had

the insulation visible, and it was really just plain ugly

so was high on our 'to do' list.

半分完成状態。

天井と丸窓と同じ様に、ノジイタを使用。

下地を打って、どんどん張っていく。

それにしても丸窓よりラクだ～。

大介が深夜3時まで苦戦した丸窓と比べて、結構早く進んでいく。

Half way finished.

We used the same wood as the other wall and ceiling.

But, boy was it easier doing this than

doing the round window.

そして完成。

うん、これでロフトもやっと本当に居心地良くなった。

丸いボール電気（ドランゴンボールライトと呼んでる）もIkeaでゲット。

木の温かみを感じるにもあまり明るくない方が心地いいよね。

Finally it feels finished and comfy.

The round lights (we call it dragon balls...)

are also from Ikea, but we like that its not too light.

We can appreciate the warmth of the wood with a softer light.

Can't wait till we get a bed in here!!

雪かき水道工事 Snow Removal Plumbing

先週末またまたちょっと野尻に足を運びました。

今回は雪かきをするため、ちゃんとシャベルももって行きました。

今日も天気がとても良くって気持ちいい！

今年は本当に雪の量が半端なく、周りのキャビンも

いくつか完全に埋もれてた・・・

私達の水のタンクが完全に埋もれていたので、

掘り起こしてみたら、潰れてた･･･

ガビーン。

雪被害の保険に入ってて良かった・・・

うちは一応屋根の雪はほぼ全部落ちていたので

屋根の下に溜まった雪をどかす作業をした。

(上の写真はパパが頑張ってるところ：））

雪は降った直前はフワフワしてて軽いけど、

時間が経つと圧縮されて、溶けたりするから

むっちゃ重くなるの。

プラスチックの雪かき用のシャベルじゃぜんぜん駄目だった。

硬くって重いシャベルでまず雪を崩しながら横に運び移す。

これか結構いい運動になるんだな。

さて、家作りの続きを書きます。

まずは、トイレを入れました。

このキャビンはなるべくシンプルにと思っていたけど、

家族の数人がウォシュレットがないと生きていけない

と言う人がいたので、ウォシュレットを購入。（さすがにこれは廃材はちょっと・・・）

大介がマニュアルを見ながら組み立ててくれた。

最後の方は丸ごとトイレにしがみつぐ感じで作業してた。

あんな風にトイレをハグするような格好になるのは

最初で最後だろうなー。

あとは外の換気扇を取り付けて

トイレ作業は終了。

うちは一応ワンカップの水洗トイレだけど、

普通のドッポン便所でもこの換気扇がついてるだけで、

ぜんぜん匂わないのです。本当に。

さて、トイレもついて、テストして、

無事に水も流れたから、一安心！

これでトイレ完成！！と言いたい所だけど、

まだドアがついてない・・・

自分たちもそうだけど、特にお客さんは嫌よねー。

春には室内用のドアの廃材探ししよ！

We went up to Nojiri again last weekend.

There was even more snow piled up than before

and a lot of the cabins around NLA

was almost completely buried.

We even had to dig out our water tank that was

buried under the snow and smashed flat.

Good thing we insured the house

for snow damage!!!

As for work on the house (that we did last autumn),

we put in the toilet.

Now this toilet was a big dilemma of mine.

I wanted to keep the cabin as simple as possible

and ecological as possible.

So, I was planning to use the old style 'drop dump' kind of toilet.

But, considering we aren't the only ones that will use the cabin

Daisuke's family strongly suggested for a 'normal' toilet.

Now, a 'normal toilet' in Japan is not only flush, but

an auto-butt-hole-cleaning-device included toilet.

Flushable is one thing, but a butt spray!!

I fought this, but it was a losing battle.

Apparently, once you get used to it, its addictive...

So, in consideration of Daisuke's family's anal addiction,

we got a butt-cleaning machine as well.

Daisuke put together the toilet

according to the manual.

It was fun to check in on him cause sometimes

it looked like he was hugging the whole toilet.

Another key feature of the toilet

is the outdoor fan.

This makes a world of difference.

Even the whole in the ground type toilets

don't stink at all with just having this fan.

So, I wish I could say we are completely

finished with the toilet room....

however, we don't have a door yet.

Might be a problem...especially when we have guests.

Come spring, we will be keeping our eyes open for some

bathroom doors to attach and finally finish

our beautiful bathroom!!!

ドアにアート A little Art

ドアも二つ廃材でゲットしたのを取り付けました。

まずはドア枠に兆番を入れる分をノミで彫る。

３ッコ分彫るから、全部同じ深さに彫らないとあとでドアがうまく閉まらないので

結構何回も調節した。

ドアもすごーーーく重いので、取り付けるのも結構大変。

ずれると取り外して、また付け直さなきゃいけないし。

こんなに重いのに、よくもたった３つの兆番で支えられているもんだ。

ドアにはチョコレート色のペンキを塗って、新品同様になった。

色も明るすぎず、暗すぎず、よかったです。チョコ大好きだしね。

そしてキャビンの大きなアクセントになってくれる、素晴らしいものを

大介ママが作ってくれました。

トールペイントで熊さんの絵とフクロウの絵を描いてくれました。

フクロウの絵の周りには実際の木の皮を載りつけて、

かなりリアルで素敵になりました。

この絵たちをドアの空いてた部分に入れて、完成。

これだけでも、かなりキャビンの雰囲気が可愛くなりました。

どんどん大介ママの作品をいっぱいキャビンに入れていきたいですね。

We found 2 nice quality doors in the dump

and finally put doors in our little cabin.

The doors are super heavy, so its quite difficult

putting the doors in, since if it is slightly not right,

the door doesn't shut straight.

But Daisuke did a good job with the door frame

so other than the fact that it was heavy as heck,

it went quite smoothly.

Daisuke's mother also made us a couple of great masterpeices

to go into the main door.

She painted a picture of a bear (there are bears around here)

and an owl (with real bark glued on around it).

It adds a great artistic touch to our cute little cabin

and I look forward to future master pieces to add to the cabin.

雪国壁仕上げ Winter Wonderland, Finishing Walls

お久しぶりです！

数日前にNZから帰ってきました。

そして、さっそくキャビンの様子を見に行きました。

今年は雪の量がすごいみたいで、キャビンの周りもすっかり雪に埋もれてました。

もちろん雪が多すぎるため、車も山に入れず、途中からは歩いて見に行きました。

久しぶりに見る我がキャビンは変わらず、結構立派に立ってました。

よかった・・・

しかも煙突が付いてます! やった！！

ここは冬は水も通らないし、薪ストーブもまだないため、冬の間に住んだり、

作業すろのはとても困難です。なにも作業をサボるためにNZ行ってた訳じゃないんですよ：）

でも今回初めて冬の野尻に行ったけど、思っていたより暖かく、

いつかは冬もここで過ごしたいと思いました。

さて、そろそろ途中で中断されたこのブログの続きを書こうと思います。

NZ行く前のラストスパートに結構いろいろ作業したのを、更新する余裕がなかったため、

今更ながらも、アップさせていただきます。

まずは、結構気に入っている半円の窓の周りの壁作りです。

ここは外の壁同様先に半円を書いて、ジグソーで切った野路板を使用。

単純だけど、うまく填めて行くのに大介は結構苦戦していました。

秋・冬はご近所さんがいないから、遠慮なく遅くまで作業ができるため、

大介はこの日朝の3時くらいまで戦ってました・・・

天井と同じ野路板を使ったから、いい感じにブレンドしていると思います。

次は石膏ボードを張り終わった壁の仕上げです。

壁は漆喰を使用。知り合いから質のいい漆喰を紹介してもらい、分けてもらいました。

漆喰を塗る前に下準備が必要です。

これに必要なのがパテとメッシュのテープ。

石膏ボードの間の隙間にメッシュのテープを貼って、

この上やネジを打った所にできた穴などをパテを塗って埋めていきます。

こんな感じです。

次に漆喰を混ぜます。

混ぜるのにはでっかいミキサーを使います。

混ぜる時は、漆喰の粉が飛ぶので、マスクとゴーグルをします。

アルカリ性だから、肺に入るとあとで辛いです。

水の中に少しずつ漆喰を混ぜて、ほどいい硬さにします。

わたしの場合はちょっと水が大目の感じのほうが塗りやすかったです。

混ぜ終わったら、あとは壁に塗るだけ。

塗り方は言葉では説明しにくいけど、とにかくあんまり力を入れないで、

優しく、均等に塗ります。

漆喰はすぐに乾いてしますので、結構着々と作業をしないと硬くなってします。

硬くなった部分の上に漆喰を重ねるのはとても難しくなるので、

作業を始めたら、とにかくできるだけ一気にやるのが一番です。

どうしても乾いたところの上からスタートしなきゃいけないこともあるから

ちょっと重なって、ざらついたところもあったけど

結構うまくぬれました。

わたしは結構こういう作業が好きで、漆喰塗りは本当に楽しかったです。

Daisuke and I returned to Japan a few days ago and this weekend

we went to go see if our cabin was still standing.

Although there has been an unusually high amount of snow this year,

our cabin was safe and sound and still smelled of sweet wood.

We don't have water here during the winter since they stop the communal pipes

to prevent freezing, and since we still don't have a stove

it would be difficult to live here this year, but the cabin was quite warm and

comfortable regardless, and we hope to spend winter here in the future.

So, before we left for NZ, we had done a lot of work that I never got

around to writing about on my blog. Better late than never though, right?!

As our neighbors were all gone after the summer we worked till pretty late

every night before we left. One night Daisuke tackled the inside wall around

our half circle window (which we really like) and hammered away until about 3am.

It's as simple as cutting the wood and putting them up, but as everything else,

simple does not mean easy, but he kept at it and it looks great, especially since

we used the same wood as the ceiling so it blends well.

I was in charge of the plastering of the walls. As I mentioned before,

we used a Japanese plaster called shikkui.

For prep, I first put a mesh tape on the sections between the plaster boards

and then put pate over this and the holes made from the nails.

This is so the plaster goes on smoothly and you can't tell where all the nails are and such.

To mix the plaster, you need a mask and goggles cause you dont want to inhale this stuff.

Then you put water in a bucket and slowing mix in the plaster powder with

a big-as mixer. When you get it the right consistency you can start.

I liked the plaster to be slightly runny (more water) since this plaster

drys up so quickly, and its hard to work with when its dry on the wall.

You can't really add on top of a layer of plaster and if you try, it gets bumpy.

This is why once you start plastering you basically have to keep going

until you reach the end of the wall (or you run out and need to make more plaster).

Some parts of the wall became a little bumpy, but overall I think I did well.

More than anything, I loved doing it. I wouldn't mind doing it all day, really :)

(予想通り）ブログの更新も遅れたまま、私達夫婦はニュージーランドファームステイの旅に出発してしまいました。

ネットがちゃんと繋がる場所にいけば、たまに更新すると思いますが、

とりあえず一月中旬まで、活動休止しちゃいます。

キャビン作りの続きを帰ってきたらちゃんと最後まで報告するので、お楽しみに！

Although I am not up to date with the blog, we got so busy at the end and before we knew it, we were on a plane for our long planned trip to New Zealand. We are traveling and staying at farms to learn about that kind of lifestyle, and so far we are having a blast!

We promise to start up where we left off on the cabin building blog when we return in January so don't give up on us!

キッチン Kitchen

私達は二人とも料理が好きだから、キッチンは狭い家でもちゃんとしたのが作りたい。

冷蔵庫も左端に置くから、ドアが右開きするのがいいと大介がかなりこだわって、

ヤフオクでかなり前に中古のをゲットした。買ってもキッチンがまだ出来てないから、

置く場所に困ったけど、水道工事もやった今(水道工事編はダイスケがいつかアップすると言ってます）、キッチン作りを開始できる！

キッチンの並びは大体こんな感じ。

カウンターを作って、あとは、壁の中ごと収納スペースにするという作戦だ。

まずはIKEAでめっちゃ安く買ったキッチンカウンターをカット。

マスキングテープを貼ってから切るときれいに切れると友達が教えてくれた。

シンクが入る部分をジグソーで切って、壁にスッポっと入るようにカウンターの置くも加工する。

こんな感じになります。

それからカウンターを立てる台を作って、カウンターを載せる。

この台はIさんの息子のR君が手伝ってくれた。これでもか！！っていうくらい頑丈に作りました。

これで、料理中にカウンターがぶっ壊れる心配もない：）

メインのキッチンカウンターのほかにも、部屋の左側にもカウンターを作った。

ここはオーブンとか炊飯器とかを置くスペースで、パン作りとか、下ごしらえのスペースにもなる。

キッチンと同じように、頑丈な台を作って、カウンターを載せて終わり。

あとはキッチンの壁の中にシェルフを作り、収納スペースを増やす。

ここには瓶とか、調味料とか、紅茶の缶など、どういうものを収納するかを考えて、

シェルフの高さを調節して作った。下の写真より沢山シェルフを作ったんだけど、

イメージはこんな感じ。

キッチン作りはこれから料理をするスペースとして、いろいろ考えて工夫して、とても楽しい。

早くこのキッチンでいっぱい料理がしたいよーー！

Daisuke and I both enjoy cooking, so making the kitchen was an area I was excited about and

put a lot of thought into. Although since our space is very limited, there wasn't much options in general.

One idea we had that we used was to make as much storage place as possible, so instead of putting a wall up in the kitchen, we decided to use the posts and make shelves out of them. I wanted shelves for jars, cups and other cooking tools so I thought a lot about the size and spacing of the shelves for the kitchen.

As for the kitchen counter, we got a great deal at IKEA for a real big kitchen counter that we cut into two peices for the main kitchen and one counter on the side of the room as well. We cut open a section for the sink, and created a sturdy stand for both counters and that pretty much completed our kitchen.

Daisuke was sure he wanted a fridge that opens from both sides for easy opening, and he bought the kitchen over a month ago, so its been sitting around taking up space. We are glad we can put it where it belongs now:)

We got a gas cooking stove for free from the local warehouse, so now all we need to do is connect our water and gas and we can start'a cookin'!!

壁２と照明 More Walls and lights

うちみたいに小さな家でも、以外と壁があるもの。リビングの壁、

トイレ、お風呂、廊下の壁。ぜーんぶ何とかせないかん。

まず、リビングを孤立させたいから、キッチンの裏と廊下の部分に

なる壁を作った。ここの木材は近所で仲良くしている人のあまりもの

をもらったので、それを使用。なんと、珍しく切られてバラバラじゃない

木材だからあっと言う間に壁が出来てしまう。

バンバンと打ち込んで、終わり。あー、楽チン。

次はトイレの壁。ここはホームセンターで売っていた（名前忘れちゃった）

和風の紙っぽい、繊維の塗り壁にするから、石膏ボードを張る。

あとはリビングと同様、腰板を入れて、ついでにライトも付けた

（壁塗る時は邪魔で外すのにね）。

石膏ボードの下地処理のパテも忘れずに。

この繊維壁は色々色があったけど、桜っぽいピンクのやつを選んだ。

繊維の中に桜のくずみたいなのが入っててとても可愛いから、塗るのが

とても楽しみ。

塗る前に水（結構いっぱい）混ぜて、少し休ませる。

そして、いざ！ぬりぬりスタート。

以外と難しいけど、コツをつかむと

着々と進み、無心になれるとても楽しい作業。結構肩こるけど。

トイレにはちょっとした収納スペースとして、壁に棚を入れた。

ここも仕上げないと、結局トイレの中が覗かれてしまうな・・・

塗り壁作業にはAiちゃんが手伝ってくれました！ありがとうねー！

あとは乾くのを待って、トイレを入れるだけ。完成の写真は後ほど。

後はお風呂の壁。ここは下地に防水合板を（コンクリート工事とかに

使われるやつ）を壁に打ち込む。

下地の合板を張るのにも、下地が必要という、相変わらずめんどくさいことが多い

（わしは下地が嫌いなのだ・・大事だけど・・）

その合板に天井に使った、米杉を打ち込んでいく。相変わらずいい香り。

そんな感じで壁作りで忙しい日々。

他にも照明を次々入れていますよー。ダイニングは私の選んだ、

ちょっとこだわり（安いけど・・・）のライト。

キャビンっぽくっていいでしょー。

We have started to do a lot of work on the inside of the cabin.

Even though its a small cabin, we have quite a few walls to

work on. There's the bathroom walls, toilet walls, hallway

and kitchen walls.

For the kitchen wall, we decided to keep it open

and just use the back of the hallway wall. Later we

will make cupbourds within the walls. The wood we used

for the hallway is wood given to us by a local friend

and it was in nice long peices. So, unlike the wall making

we made previously, which was all in little peices,

this wall was easy easy easy. We were done in just

a few minutes. So, now this must be what it feels to

use materials that aren't chopped in tiny peices.

ah- the ease... I can get used to this.

For the toilet, we used a Japanese paper/fiber mix

wall that you put on the wall like a plaster wall.

I chose the cherry blossom color and it was a lot of

fun to put on. A newly made friend named Ai also came

to help.

For the bathroom, we used water-proof boards that

are generally used in concrete construction. On top

of these boards we used the red-cedar wood peices

we used on the roof. However, there wasn't enough

to do the whole thing, so we have to think about what

we do with the rest.... but we will think about that

later.. haha.

We also put in some more lights. I really like our dining room

light, that has a nice cabin-feel to it with the design of

the leaves. It's kinda like a cheaper version of a tiffani lamp :)

内装壁 Inside walls

前から漆喰の壁に憧れてるから、内装の壁は漆喰

にすることにした。漆喰は自然な素材からできてるし、

湿気を吸ってくれるし、しかも結構値段も安い。なんとなく

高いものだと思っていたんだけど・・

漆喰や塗り壁類に必要なのは下地。漆喰とか

珪藻土には石膏ボードが下地になる。

全部漆喰で白だと寂しいから、腰板を入れると言うことで、

腰板を同じ太さの太めの石膏ボードを買った。

石膏ボードも意外と安い。でも驚くほど重たい。本当に石みたいな

ものなんだなーと思いながら、泣き泣き運ぶ感じ。

その石膏ボードを壁に打ち込んでいくんだけど、一人支えて、

一人打ち込むから、支えてるほうは本当に泣きたくなるほど重い。

早くして打ち込んでくれ～～～っと心で叫びながら、必死に耐える。

家作りは楽しいけど、なんでこう重い物ばかりなのだろう・・・

所々石膏ボードを加工して、どんどん壁に打ち込んでいく。

一気に断熱材も隠れて、家の中の壁が出来ていくから、満足度は高い。

壁はこれで終わりでもいいかな、って思っちゃうくらい。

次に腰板を打ち込んでいく。

これも下地を打って、長さに切って、ステープルエアーガンで

打ち込んでいくだけなんだけど、私達は

ちょっと下地を適当にやりすぎて、深さがバラバラになっちゃったから、

切ったダンボールでごまかしながらやった。

下地はちゃんとやるべきだね。あとで後悔することが多いから。

腰板を石膏ボードが入るとこんな感じになる。

本当、これだけで内装終わりでいいやと一瞬思ってしまう。

この作業はK太とAnriが手伝いに来てくれた。なにを手伝っているのかは謎だが・・・

I have always liked plastered walls, and wanted to do plaster

inside our cabin. There is a plaster type called shikkui in Japan

that has been used for a long time. It is made of all natural

materials (sea shells and such), absorbs moisture (which is a good

thing around here where its always humid) and is relatively cheap.

Making the whole wall out of plaster is kinda boring so we

decided to have wood up to about the waist and bought the thick

type of plaster board to match the width of the wood.

Plaster board is called sheet rock,and is literally, as heavy

as a board of rock. They look innocent enough,

but when you pick one up, (or try to pick it up)

it feels your arms and back will give out.

Building a cabin is fun, but why does everything have to be so

darn heavy... Carrying the boards were one thing, but holding

them in place while Daisuke screwed them into the wall was

more than any kind of tolerance training I have ever experienced.

Who needs a gym when you can build a house?!

Once the sheet rock was up and we put in the wooden wall peices

the interior looks more and more finished. It looks nice (its

especially nice to have the ugly insulation covered up) so it

makes me think that its as good as done and not bother with it

anymore, I have always wanted to plaster so there are

several good days work left on these walls, I guess.

排水 Grey&Black Water

これはなんでしょう？

でかい蚊取り線香入れではないですよ。

これはトイレの廃棄物入れの便層です。

ここは排水がないから、ドッボン便所で、一応うちは

1カップトイレで水は流れるのにするから、

でかい1000Lのを設備屋さんが持ってきてくれました。

これを入れるから、かなり深くまで穴を掘ります。

すっぽり入りましたね。

これを一回水でいっぱいにして、回りの土を落ち着かせます。

パイプを繋げて土が落ち着いたら、土を戻してふたをして、終わり。

次にトイレの準備。まず床に穴が空きます。

ここにドボンっと落ちていく訳ですね・・

小さい穴を流す時の水を繋げるためです。

排水のパイプを繋げたら、とりあえず便器の準備完了。

次は他の排水の工事。残念ながら、ここは垂れ流しになって

しまうのだ。そのため、ちゃんと植物性だけの石鹸などを

使うように心掛けなければいけない。

またまた排水パイプの入れるように深く穴を掘る。

その穴の中に砂利を入れる。砂利があるほうが水が

ちゃんと地面に浸透するからだと思う。

次にちょくちょく穴が空いてるパイプを入れる。

これも徐々に水が流れるようにするため。

さらにパイプを古いシーツに包む（砂など入らないように）

そして、またその上に砂利を引く。

また土を乗せたら排水工事完了。

単純な作業だけど、ユンボがないと無理だなー。

いつか自分でユンボ操縦できるようになれば

さらにコスト削減できるんだろうなー。

Our cabin is up in the mountains,

and there is no way to connect to sewage here.

First, we had to get a big tank for our black water

sewage. Its that funny looking tank in the pic above.

It's a 1000ltr tank, so should hold for a few months

at least.

We dug a big whole to fit the big tank in, then filled

the tank with water so that it will settle in the ground.

After a few days we connected the tank to a pipe

and covered it with soil. Pretty simple.

Every once in a while, we will call people to suck up

the poopies. fun fun.

Next, the grey water. Since there is no sewage here,

we basically have to drain the water out in the soil.

So, it is very important to use only bio-degradable soaps.

Another deep and long hole was dug behind our cabin

and we layed gravel to help the draining.

Next we put in a holly pipe so the water drains little

by little instead of all in one place.

We covered the pipe with an old sheet to prevent soil

and such from stuffing the holes, and covered it again

with gravel.

That was pretty much all there was to it.

In the future maybe Daisuke and I can learn how to

use those big shovel trucks and do this work ourselves,

since that would save a nice chunk of money...

I plan to plant flowers above this newly dug up soil.

Maybe the grey water will help fertilize them :)

床張り Floor

ちょっと気の早い私達はニトリの家具を見ている時にちょうどいいソファベッドがあったため、購入してしまった。

一応配達日は買った日から１っヶ月後にしてもらったけど、気づいたらもう一ヶ月が過ぎようとしていた。

ソファベッドが届く前にやらなければいけないことがある。それは床張り。ソファベッドが来てからだと、邪魔で仕方がない。そういうわけで、急いで床作りは開始。

床材は結構前からTres Homesのあまりものを安く売ってもらって、家の隅っこで待機させてた。この床材はアメリカの大きいホームセンターで売っている、DIY向けの物で、パーケットと呼ばれている建材。

まず、リビングの掃除をして、床のほこりをなるべくきれいにする。用意するのは木工用ボンドと床用釘。友達から借りた、床用釘を打ち込むエアーガンもあるとかなり便利。

次にパーケットをまっすぐ引けるように、炭つぼで部屋の真ん中に線を書いておく。それからパケットをなるべくまっすぐにリビングの真ん中からボンドを付けてから、打ち込んでいく。

この最初のラインをまっすぐにするのがとても重要。でもパーケットのサイズも微妙に違うから、どうしても多少ズレが出てきてしまう。しょうがないっと思ってここでまっすぐに

しなかったのが、あとで後悔することになる。実際わたしたちは後悔した・・・

続いて、真ん中に引いた最初の列から、ピラミッド状にどんどんパーケットをひいていく。この日は大介の両親も手伝いに来てくれたので、４人で作業をした。

最初の内はいいけど、そのうちどんどん最初のずれのつけが回ってきて、なかなかパーケットが横と下のパレットに収まらなくなっていく。これを叩いて微調節するのがなかなか難しい。そして微調節しても、そのうちどうしてもずれが出てきて、パーケットがと入らなくなる。大介みたいなA型＆細かい人には耐え難い作業。

そのうち諦めるしかないんだけどね。

そして床張りに苦戦しながら、途中、なんとパーケットが足りないことに気づく。本当は余るくらいあるはずだという話だったが、なんと計算違いでまったく足りない。

仕方がないので、リビングの４面の隅にパーケットを貼るのは諦めて、足りる分だけ貼ることになった。

空いてしまう部分はあとでなにか対策を考えなければいけない。材料をもうちょっと買うことも、アメリカからかなり前に輸入したもので、もう手に入らないため、できない。

まー、あまり物の材料を使うというのは、こういうことは付き物で、仕方がない。あとでまた工夫して考えよう。

とりあえず完成したのが、下の写真。近くで見ない限りは多少の隙間などわからないので、結構きれいな仕上がりになった。一気に室内の雰囲気がでてきた感じ。

なんとかソファーベッドが届く前に完成できて、一安心。

When we went window shopping for funiture one day, we ran into a sofa bed that was a great price with a nice design and bought it on the spot.

Although we scheduled the delivery date to be one month after we purchased it, that one month was about to pass, and we realized that we had better

get the living room floor done before it arrives, since it would be really hard to work around it later.

We had bought left over materials from Tres Homes for a cheap price some months ahead of time. It was floor material that is sold in Home Depot, and

is pretty DIY friendly. The tricky thing with this material, is that you are supposed to make the first line very straight so all the other peices fit in

nicely later. However, the individual peices are not exactly straight, so after a while, the lines start to get out of wack.

It was fine at first, but after a while we were trying to make the sides fit in, and if we put in one side, the other side came out, etc etc. Eventually,

we had to give up and just let some of the sections of the floor have a slight space between the peices. Hey, maybe when there is a lot of moisture

in the air, it will expand and fit perfectly... (wishful thinking).

We ran into a little trouble when we realized that there actually wasn't enough material to cover the whole living room floor. When we bought the

material, we miscalculated the amount (it was supposed to be more than enough), and we can't purchase anymore since it was imported from the US

probably a while ago. So, we layed the peices out and let the outer rims of the living room bare for now. We will have to think of something to cover it up

but that's just the price you pay when you use left over materials I guess.

With the help of glue and a floor nail gun we borrowed from our friend, and the helping hands of Daisuke's parents, we were able to get the floor done

in time before the sofa bed arrived. With the floor done, the inside of the cabin is beginning to look more and more like a living space instead of a

construction site. Now we have to be more careful that our feet are clean before we walk into the house!!

天井 Ceiling

野路板も乾いてニスを塗ったところ、長さを切って、やっと天井張りがスタート。

一ヶ所やるのに二人がかりでやる。

野路板は時間が経つと乾いて縮んでしまう。そのため、ある程度縮んでもいいように、

２．５ｃｍ重ねて天井を張った。

ロフトの部分は大介のお姉さんのみーちゃんが手伝ってくれた。

あと、別の日には麻衣ちゃんと大介の母も一緒にやってくれた。

二人がかりだから、助かった。

最後の日は大介も加わって、3人でやった。やっぱり一人より二人、二人より三人。

人数が多いほうが作業が早いもんですな。

ロフトの部分より、リビングの部分大変だった。

足場を組んで、特に上の部分はかなり高いから、結構怖かった。

他の作業をしながらだったけど、けっこう何日も掛けてやっと完成した。

予想よりカッコよくなって、すごく木の家っぽさがでて、

木の香りも素敵だから、気に入ってます。

こういう作業は終わるとすごく満足感あるけど、

やってる間は一枚一枚、長さが合わなかったり、

釘がすべって落ちたり、節で釘がなかなか入らなかったり、

キツイ体制でハンマーを打ってると、もう、疲れて最後には気合で声を出さないと力が入らないくらい

結構疲れる作業なのだ。

だから終わってよかったーー。

天井が終わって、早速ヤフオクで買ったシーリングファンを取り付けた。

一番上だとファンが横に当たっちゃうから、大介がファンを少し下げた

所に取り付けれるために小細工して、二人で取り付けた。

この作業が一番高いところで、ファンもすごく重くって、

何気に死ぬかと思った・・・・ハハ・・

でもライトアップした瞬間はちょっと感動。

横に当たらない結構ギリギリの所になったけど（地震があったらちょっとやばいかも・・・）

これが全体的の写真。内装もだんだん完成に近づいてきて、ワクワクしてます！

After drying the cedar wood and staining it, we spent many days working on the ceiling.

As I talked about before, this cedar wood is quite wet, and even though

we spent some time drying it, the wood will probably still shrink quite a bit after we put it up.

So, we decided to put one plate over another (2.5cm) to give it some room to shrink without opening up too much space between.

Daisuke's sister helped us out a lot on the loft section and since it takes at least two people to do this work (one person needs to hold the wood into place while one hammers it in) it was a lot of help having her. Maiko and Daisuke's mother helped as well, all on different days.

The loft section is fine since there is a floor, but the living room section required us to work on high up on a pretty limited foot space, so was quite tiring.

In the end, we really like the look of it, and our house smells more of wood than before.

We even added the ceiling fan, which was also very heavy and quite scary to put on.

The ceiling fan would hit the sides of the ceiling, so Daisuke had to make a box that we could connect the ceiling fan/light on so it would lower it a little.

When we did a light up after dark, I must say it was a happy moment.

The insides starting to come together and we are quite excited!

外壁の上の部分 Upper Outer Wall

外壁を全部シーダーシェイク風にするかしないかを悩んでたけど、やっぱりちょっと変えてみようと思った。上の角度の部分を何枚も何枚も切らないといけないと思うと、なんとなくイヤッだったし・・・天井板用に買ったのじ板もステインすると結構カッコいいよとアドバイスをもらって、それを使うことに。

まずはのじ板を図った長さに切って、屋根に合わせて、上の部分は45度に切っておく。本当にステインを塗るとなかなかカッコいい模様が出てくる。

この切った板を事前に下地を打ったところに打ち込む。大きいエリアを一つの板でカバーできるから、やっぱりシェイクより楽だ：）

でもこの作業は高い足場の上でやる。下を見ると結構怖いもの。なるべく下を見ないように、見ないように、一つ一つ打ち込んでいく。

板と板の間から少し中の光とかが漏れちゃうので、間に胴縁という木材も打ち込む。

板を全部並べるとこんな感じ。

完成はこうなりました。うん。カッコいい！

さて、ほんとうのチャレンジは家の反対側。

こっちも窓は半円形になっているから、板を切るのが大変。

とりあえずのじ板は反対の壁のように切っておいた。

そのあと、コンパスみたいなのを（余った木材を長さ調節して、先っちょに鉛筆をテープで付けたもの）

作って、半円形の線を描いた。

そのラインをジグソーできれいに切ることができた。

そして、こっちも完成。外壁もこれどほぼ完成。

外から見て、ずいぶん完成度高くなって、大満足!

We finally worked on the upper section of the outer walls.

We weren't sure if we wanted to do cedar-fake all the to this portion of the wall,

and considering that we would have to cut so many of the pieces to fit into the angle of the roof,

we thought it would be easier to do it a different way, and a change in design might make it more interesting.

So, we used to wood that we ordered to make the indoor ceiling, stained and cut it and used that for the outer wall. One of these covers a lot more area than the cedar-fake, so the process was a lot faster and easier. But, we had to stand quite high up, which honestly was kinda scary.

Thankfully, it wasn't a windy day :)

The other side with the half-circle window was a even bigger challenge. We made a compass-like tool to help us draw out the line for round window and cut that with a jigsaw.

All-in-all, we think the wall looks pretty cool, and were glad with the speedy process and the final look of the outer wall. Now, when you drive past our cabin, it looks practically finished from the outside!!

トイレお風呂の準備 Bathroom Prep

水道工事をやる前に（トイレを入れる前に）トイレの床を入れたほうがいいと言われ、さっそくトイレの床と天井を作った。トイレは面積が狭いから、ここにも貰った床材の廃材とロフトで使った木材の余りを組み合わせて使った。大体同じ長さだから、３つほど合わせるとちょうど床と天井の長さくらいになって、これを他の部屋と同じ様にのりを付けて、ステイプルガンでバッシンバッシン打ち込んで固定していく。狭いおかげで結構すぐに完成。

ほかには樽風呂の下に、水が抜ける穴を入れた。ウィスキー樽はものすごいゴッツイ木を使っているから、穴をあけるのも結構大変。普通のホールソーを使えばそんなに難しくなかったかもしれないけど、私達は(分からないから）いろいろサイズを入れ替えできると言う、じつは非常に使えないホールソーを買ってしまった。これはサイズを変えられるのはいいのかもしれないけど、まったく頑丈さがなく、すぐに壊れてしまうし、威力もないからなかなか穴をあけるのにも時間がかかった。

でもなんとか穴をあけて、削られた木からはさらにウィスキーの香りが広がった。あー、はやくこのお風呂が使いたいなーーー

Before we put in the toilet, we were advised to put in the floor of the bathroom (so we won't have to work around the toilet to do so) so we did that right away. We had left over wood from the wood we used in the loft, and also some other random floor wood we got from local carpenters. We were able to connect about 3 peices to make the length of the floor and ceiling, and after that, all it took was some glue and the staple gun to keep it in place in the floor. Since the bathroom is nice and small, we were able to get this done quite quickly.

We also finally opened a hole in the whiskey barrel to let the water out of it when we take a bath. The wood of the barrel is super thick and hard so we had a hard time opening the whole. It may not have been so hard if we had a decent hole saw, but we got a crappy one (the kind that you can change the sizes and is as flimsy as paper) since we didn't know better. This piece of s--- would break and had no power what so ever so it took a while to open the whole, but finally it was done and the wood smelled again of fresh whisky. Ohhh I just can't wait to take a bath in it!!!

ドア枠 (建具) 作り Door Frame

最近はめっきり秋らしくなり、夜は羽毛布団を被らないと寝られない程寒くなってきました。大分前になるんだけど、家の外側の完成度を上げるためにドア枠を作りました。枠だけ作ったは良いけど、ドアはまだ取り付けてません。だって邪魔になるんだもん。

普通ドアっていうものは、ドア枠とセットになって買ってくるものだけど、うちの場合トレスさんの倉庫に眠ってた中古のドアを使うので、ドアに合った枠を自分達でつくらなくっちゃいけない。

これが意外と面倒な作業。うちはちっさい家の癖に入り口が二箇所ある。片方の入り口 (勝手口?) の方はすんなり作れたんだけど、メインの方はそうは行かない。なぜかというと、メインのドアの横幅が、ドアが入るべく作ってある開口部 (柱と柱の間) よりも広いから。勝手口の方のように、通常であれば、ドアのサイズに合った枠を作って開口部に嵌めればいいんだけど、メインの方は開口部の内側アンド外側に、半分枠が浮き出た形で上手い具合に枠を嵌め込まなきゃならない。これを作るのには大分苦心しました。

ドアのチョウバン(ドアが開く時に支点となる方)が付く方は、開口部の内側に入れちゃうからそんなに大変でもない。まずヒノキのプレーナー材をドアの高さと枠の上下の部分を組み込む幅を足した長さに切ります。次に閉めた時にドアが当たる、戸当りを作るため、丸ノコを使って木材からドアの厚みの分 x ドアが当たる分を削り取ります。

最後に上下の部分がきっちり収まるように両端に細工をします。これで一辺完成。

次に上下の枠を作ります。チョウバン側は開口部に収まるから良いけど、ドアノブ側は開口部から出っ張っちゃうから、こんな変な形のものを作らなくちゃいけなかった。写真はステインを塗った後のもの。

ドアノブ側は完全に開口部の外にでるから、チョウバン側の外壁部に出っ張ってる部分=ドアの厚さに木材を切っておしまい。

4 辺が全部できたから組み合わせ準備 OK！と思ったら計算間違えてて上下の枠の長さが足りないという事実が発覚・・・ショックを受けつつも目立たないように木片を木工用ボンドで繋げて、なんとかごまかします。一辺ずつ開口部に嵌めて・・・

完成！作り終わっちゃうと、なんであんなに (2日間) も悩まされたのだろうと思うくらい目立たない存在になっちゃいました。

これはやってる本人にしか分からない苦労なんだな、きっと。

The weather is becoming cooler everyday, and the hints of autumn are all around. It was a while back, but Daisuke made the door frames for the house (although we aren't going to attach the doors yet, since it will just get in the way).

Supposedly, most doors come with the door frame as a set, but since we scavenged our doors at the Tres Homes warehouse and got them for free, there was no such convenience (as usual). Although our house is quite small, for some reason we had decided on having two doors. (I don't remember why now... why oh why... maybe it was to have easier access to the bathroom in case of emergencies..) Any, one of the doors was a normal size so we were able to make a frame that fit right between the beams no problem. The other door (to become our main entrance) is a beautiful green door that gave Daisuke many a headaches. The reason being is that it is too big to fit between the beams of the wall, so he had to make a frame that would stick out from the wall, and yet support the big (and heavy) door. Oh, the number of hours and days he spent staring at the door and wall and pondering how he will put the darned thing up. But, finally he got it done somehow, (I am not quite sure what he did, because I chose to stay out of this battle) and the frame is up and ready for the door!

雑用　Random Busy-ness

最近はめっちゃ頑張ってます。

本当です。やる事がいっぱいで、たまに頭がこんがらがっています。マジで。

今、沢山の作業をやっているのだけれど、なかなか完成している作業がないので、ブログに書きづらい部分があります。

たとえば、外壁は永遠にやってるけど、まだ終ってません。合板を切って、ステインして、乾かして、二度塗りして、また乾かして、そして壁に打ち込む。

この作業を何日もちょくちょく、着実に進めていて、今は4つ目の壁が終りそうです。写真は以下。

ちゃんと完成してから全体の写真をアップしたいものです。

他になにをやっているかというと、これがまたかなりの手間のかかる作業で、何日もかけてやっています。

それは天井に使う野地板の下準備。野地板はとても安い木材で、まったく乾かしていないもの。杉を切って、そのままお店に並ぶ感じ。

そのため、かなりウエットで、そのうちすごく縮んでくるらしい。あと、私達が買ったのは本当に一番安いものだったから、表面もザラザラ。

さすがに予想以上にざらざらだったので、またまた藤木さんに頼んで、電動カンナを貸していただいた。

全部で240枚ある野地板を一枚一枚電動カンナで削って、そして太陽に下に並べて、干した。240枚も・・・

夜は雨とか霧が多かったから、毎日外に干したものを中に運び入れて、朝にまた出して干すの繰り返し。かなりの筋トレ。

安い木材はその分、労働が必要ですな。

野地板を削って出た木くずがあまりに多かったので、両親のキャビンの玄関までの道に引いた。

削って乾かした野地板はこんな感じになる。木っぽくって、わたしは好き。

そして、最後にこの240枚の板をVatonって言う内装用のステインを塗った。内装は木の感じを残すためにステインは透明にした。

この作業も家の中でしかできないから、ステインして、一日乾かして、そして他のも塗る。夜遅くまで二人で、最初は歌など歌いながら、後半は無言でひたすら塗りまくった。

そんな感じで、地味な作業だけれども、忙しく過ごしています。そして、毎日クタクタです。こんな暮らししていて、あんまり言える立場ではないけど、

休みてーーーーー。

Daisuke and I have been keeping super busy lately. There is so much work to do, we hardly know where we should start and when it will ever end.

Alot of the work we have been doing lately is very tedious. I love our outer wall, but my god, it is taking so much time to do. We are still working on the forth and final wall.

The picture of the fourth wall is the above, and we are almost done with it, and I want to put up the final pictures of the finished walls soon... when it happens.

Having to cut the plywood boards, stain it, dry it, stain it again, then nail them into the walls... its all fun but really... never ending... But the great thing about doing this house project is that everyday we can see that we make progress, and compared to the work we used to do in offices, we can see the work becoming closer to the end product with every board we stain and every nail hammer.

Another big and tedious task we have been keeping busy with is drying the wood that we will use for the ceiling. This wood is pretty much the cheapest you can find in Japan, and part of the reason is because they basically chop the tree down, slice it up, and put it in the stores without drying them. So, they come pretty wet, and not exactly pretty. Plus, the wood we got was really rough, a little too rough, that we decided to borrow a electric sander from the carpenter who is lending us so much of his wonderful tools (and we thank him with a big bottle of sake each time :) ). So, the process of sanding down the wood, all 240peices of them, then laying them out to dry, and carrying them in and out of the house day after day (when sunny) has been keeping us quite busy and giving us a pretty good work out. Like many things, the price of the wood was cheap, but we payed for the difference with our labor.

The picture above shows how we covered the path leading to my parents cabin with all the sawdust that came out of the sanding, which I think looks kinda nice.

After the wood was dry, we stood them up inside and stained them. We chose a clear stain for the inside, since we wanted to keep the color of the wood. Daisuke and I stained at night after the sun went down, and we stained all 240 pieces. One by one by one by one...... We would usually start the night of staining with music from the iPod and us singing along, but after a while we would both fall silent and just stain stain stain as if we were in a trance. But like the other work, if we keep at it, eventually it ends, and now we are ready to put up those darned peices of wood into the ceiling!

お風呂天井　Bath　Ceiling

やっと夏のシーズンが終わり、長い夏休みも過ぎ、作業開始しました。やる事が山ほどあって、どこから手を付けるか迷いながら、ちょくちょく進んでます。4つ目の外壁も少しずつ完成に近づいているし、断熱材もちょくちょく入れている。

今日はお風呂の天井の作業を紹介します。お風呂は木のお風呂にこだわった分、やっぱり壁も木がいいと思っていたら、なんとめっちゃクオリティーの高いRed Cedar（米杉、ヒノキ科）の廃材が屋根工事をしてくれたNさんが沢山くれた。これがまたすごーく香りがいいのです。

この廃材も一つ一つ長さが違って、結構短いんだけど、なんとかうまくロフトの床の根太に貼ることができた。

まずお風呂は湿気が多いから、ロフトの根太に防湿シートを貼って、その上に床下カラッと言う乾燥剤を撒いた。これは体と環境に害のないもので、半永久的にもつらしい。

その下からロフトの床を張る時に使った、エアーステープルでバンバン根太に廃材を打ち込んでいく。廃材の間には一応木工用ボンドを塗っておいた。

バラバラの長さを慎重に選んで、ほとんど廃材を切らずにフィットさせることができた。

これで風呂天井完成。とてもいい感じで、ヒノキの香りがなんともいえないくらい最高。

We couldn't do any construction work during the summer season, but now that the season is over we are back to hammering away the outer walls and putting in insulation. The season was fun with all the people (usually there is hardly anyone around). Lots of tennis and golf and swimming in the lake, but toward the end, Daisuke and I were pretty tired of play, and ready to get back to building.

One thing we finished recently is putting up the bathroom ceiling. We used Red Cedar pieces that Mr. N gave us that were left over and sitting in his warehouse. It has a great scent and is the strongest kind of wood you can find against moisture. Japanese wooden baths often use this type of wood, so the scent is very much like a Japanese traditional bath place, which is absolutely awesome.

We put up moisture prevention sheets and a natural moisture observer under the loft floor, and used the air-stapler we borrowed to nail in the little and random pieces of cedar wood. We put a little glue between the pieces to help it stay in place, but we mostly very carefully chose the pieces so that we hardly didn't cut any of the them to make it fit perfectly in the ceiling. The process was very quick (thanks to the air gun) and we couldn't be happier with the way it looks (and smells!)

ロフトと天井　Loft and Ceiling

夏休みに入ってからは、周りに迷惑になるので、工事はできないというルールがあって、最近は遊んでばかりいる。でも一応ちょくちょく進めているので、久しぶりにアップします。

大工さんに来てもらった時にロフトの作り方を教えてもらって、ロフト作りに取り組んだ。ロフトの根太に使ったのは２ｘ１０（スプルースという木を、縦横が２インチx１０インチに切ったもの。長さは関係ない２ｘ１０を柱と柱の間の長さに切り、その間にもネジを打ち込めるように４５ｃｍ単位で２ｘ１０を入れていく。

先に電気工事をやってしまっていたので、電線が通っている所に２ｘ１０に穴をあけて通すことにした。２ｘ１０を全部並べるとこんな感じに仕上がる。

この上に床用の木材をホチキスみたいなエアーガンで下の２ｘ１０に打ち込んで固定する。

終った状態がこれ。

天井の断熱材もロフトを入れてから入れた。天井と断熱材の間にちゃんと空洞ができないと湿気がたまって断熱材がぐちょぐちょになるらしい。そのため、ちゃんと空気が通る空洞を天井と屋根の間に作って、壁にもその空気が抜ける穴も作らないといけない。

これを知らないで断熱材をいれると大変な事になるらしい。断熱材はふわふわしてるから、下手に押し込んで入れてしまうと、結局空洞が詰まって、湿気が溜まる。天井の断熱材はかなり気を使って入れなければいけない。もちろん、断熱材がないと、夏はめっちゃ暑くなってしますし、冬も暖かい空気が全部逃げてしまう。家の空気の流れなどを考えて作るのはとても大切なことらしく、とても勉強になった。

最近は毎日毎日雨。

ただの雨じゃないくって、すざましい雨。作業場も畑も溺れそう・・・

とにかくお風呂が届いて、早く中に入れたいけど、お風呂場の床ができてない。

まずお風呂場の長さを測って、余った木材を切って、縦に打ち込む。それをまた余った木材で下から支えるように、打ち込む。

こんな感じ。

次に根太を横に何センチかごとに打ち込んで、こんな感じになる。

その上にはリビングの床と同じように合板を打ち込む。周りの壁には断熱材を入れて、床の壁を防水シートで囲む。

あとで排水に繋げるために穴は開けておいて、パイプをとりあえず突っ込んでおく。

仕上げはこんな感じ。

あとはモルタルを引くだけでいいと思っていたけど、(いいのかもしれないけど）、知り合いに防水シートだけじゃなにかと心持たないから、FRPというサーフボードなどを作る素材で床を作ったらとアドバイスしてくれた。余ったFRPのシート（ちょいとぼろぼろ）も貰ったし、あとは材料をMusashiで買ってやってみた。

これがこの家作りを始めてから一番最悪の経験になるとも知らず・・・

まず、FRPの色が大介が間違えてものすごい色のブルーを買ってしまった。返すにはMusashiは遠いし、上にモルタル引けばいいかと思い、その色で作業をすすめた。

そしてFRPはとんでもなく臭い。シンナー(？）の臭いかな。なんか、もう頭クラクラで気持ち悪い。しかもFRPはものすごくベトベトする。そしてすぐ乾いてしまうらしいから、急がないといけない。さらにもらった古いシートはぼろぼろだから、くっついて上手くFRPを塗れない。ものすごい色の青のFRPが体中にくっつき、臭いに頭がクラクラになり、何ともいえない苛立ちと気分の悪さ。

真ん中が凸凹になってしまい、良くないと思いながらも、もうどうしようもない。なんというものに手を出してしまったんだろうと二人で思いながら、とにかくはやく体を洗いたい一心でその日は引き上げた。

そして次の日、3時間で完全に乾くはずのFRPがまだベトベト。そしてまだ臭い。雨が降っているせいか、硬化剤が足りなかったのか、わからないし、直しようもないまま、とてつもない臭いの中家の作業を進める。

そして、あげくの果て、やっぱり真ん中が凸凹なのは問題だ・・・と様子を見に来てくれた知り合い。水がそこで水たまりになって流れなかったら、家の床とか、柱とか、蒸発したら天井とかが腐るらしい。家が一番早く悪くなる理由は水周りの問題。凸凹があるくらいならFRPしないほうが良かったねっと言われた。

あぁーーーーあ。

あの苦しみはいったいなんのために・・・

そもそもあんなに体に悪いものは環境にも悪いに決まってる。環境を考えて建ててる家なのに、なんで使ってしまったんだろう。お風呂の床の防水力をなるべくよくして、お風呂を早く完成させたいという気持ちが焦りを生んだのだろうか。あのFRPの青い色を見るたびに自分に対する腹立ちと、水周りの問題をどうするかで苦悩している。

とにかく、モルタルをできるだけ上手に塗って、床に傾斜をつけるように頑張るしかない。

夢のお風呂を中に入れる日はまだまだ先のよう・・・トッホホ。

Recently, we have been getting a lot of rain, everyday.... everyday.... My garden and our cabin construction site is drowning from it and we are stuck in the house and although we appreciated the break for a while, are getting quite bored of it.

Now that my dream bath has arrived, I am anxious to get it indoors into the bathroom. So, we started working on the bathroom floor. We used left over wood to make the floor as seen in the pictures above. Nothing too complicated, just like the living room floor.

We were instructed to put in the boards and then to cover the floor and half the wall with the water-proof tybec sheets we used for the outer walls. All seemed easy enough and after leaving a whole in the floor for the drain and a pipe that we can cut later, the floor was done quite quickly.

We planned to put some cement in on top of that, and call it a finished floor. But our recent friend advised that we could put in FRP to make the floor more water proof, since cement alone tends to leak. He had some old sheets of glass wool sheets for the FRP which were pretty worn out, but we had no idea what we were getting into, and were grateful for his advice and bought the materials and got to work.

The first shock came at the color of the FRP. Daisuke was tired or something, and bought a bright neon blue color FRP. FRP is often used to fix up surf boards, but I wouldn't have chosen this color even for a surf board. But, it was too far and too much trouble to exchange it at the store we bought it and we figured we can cover it with the cement that we had bought anyway, and got to work.

The second shock was the horrendous smell. I am sure this stuff is pretty toxic, cause after a few minutes of laying it down, I was feeling all dizzy. Plus the old sheets that were given to us kept sticking to the roller and things weren't going well at all.

But, there was no stopping since the instructions said this stuff hardens very quickly, and we were anxious to get finished with the awfully stickly and smelly job. Hard as I tried, I could not get the FRP to become completely flat, and so in the end, we had a bumpy finish in the middle. That, and a very dizzy, sticky, pissy, and probably high wife (that would be me) made us both want to be finished and out of the house.

I have never been high in my life, but this was probably as close as I have ever gotten to it. As much as my head hurt from the foul smell, I was obsessively fighting the little bumps that kept coming up no matter how much I fought it and no matter how much Daisuke told me to leave it.

Of course, the bumps mean trouble, and our friend who suggested it said that maybe it was better if we hadn't done it at all... which was disappointing after going through all of the horror mentioned above.

All we can do is make the cement cover as best we can and put a solid slope to it so the floor won't be full of puddles. That and hope for the best I guess.

I don't know why we decided to use such a thing that is probably bad for our health and the enviornment, but in our haste to finish the floor and to make it as best we could, we took the advise that is probably very good advise for people who know what they are doing. I don't know if I would try this again, but next time I do think I could do a better job... that and I would prepare a gas mask to do it.

窓　Windows

冬もキャビンを使えるように、窓は断熱性の高い二重になっているものをTres Homesを通してアメリカから輸入した。

キャビン作りの計画中に窓は輸入に時間がかかるから、去年の秋から決めて、一番最初の買い物だった。それが先日窓枠も完成して、ちょうどいいタイミングで届かれた。そしてこの窓が重いのなんの！どうしようと思っていたけど、大介父も手伝ってくれて、窓の片方を外すと随分軽くなって、3人で持ち上げることができた。

窓枠にスッポっとはめるとインパクトでサッシに付いてる穴を通して窓枠に繋げる。あとは防水テープで周りをタイベックに貼って、水の浸透を防ぐ。

気をつけるポイントと言えば、あんまりないけど、サッシの周りの外側にタイベックが乗るようにしたほうがいいから、はめ込む前にタッカーで止めた部分を外して(以下の写真)、入れる時に上手くタイベックを外に出す感じかな。

窓を入れてさらに家らしくなってきた。

We imported our windows from the US, since the windows are better winterized and prices are reasonable. We ordered them last fall, and after we finished the window frames, the windows were delivered to us. To enjoy the outside green, we have a lot of windows in our small cabin ;)

Putting in the windows is not so hard, but the windows are reallllly heavy. We managed to put them in by taking one of the glass sides out, and also getting the man-power help from Daisuke's father. After we heave them into place, all we had to do was drill them in with the impact driver, and put water proof tape around the sides to keep the rain out. We were able to put most the windows in, but the ones for the upper section of the house need some more work with the framing, and we are going to wait for some professional advise on that.

Now that the windows are in, the cabin is looking more and more like a livable house. Although the windows seems larger and more open before the windows went in, we are very happy with our windows and the fact that they will keep the bugs out and the warmth in once the cabin is done.

樽風呂 Barrel Bath

お風呂は最初からこだわりたかったからいろいろ探した。五右衛門風呂とか、木のお風呂とか、ドラム缶まで考えたけど、やっぱり木のお風呂がいいと思っていた。ヒノキのお風呂はとても素敵だけど、とても高い。なら樽のお風呂なら安く手に入るかなーと思っていたけど、ネットで探してもあまりないし、しかもあるものは20万以上する。どうしよう、どうしようと考えている時に、家族で山梨に旅行に行った。辺りにはワイナリーが沢山あり、お店にはワインの樽をテーブルなどに使っていた。もしやと思い、その樽家具はどこで手に入れているのかを聞いたら、近くに樽職人がいると言う。さっそく尋ねてみたら、ガラス工房の裏に樽に囲まれたおじさんが一人、小松さんがいた。

樽をお風呂にしたいと言う話をしたら、大丈夫だよと言ってくれて、値段も聞いてみたら、これがまたびっくりするくらい安くって、その場で売ってくれるようお願いした。でもこれは去年の秋で、まだまだ家作りも始めてないから、また春に来るということになり、ものすごく素敵な出会いにワクワクしながらその場を去った。

そして家作りが開始してから、また小松さんに連絡をして、今はワインだけじゃなく、ウィスキーの樽があると知った。ワインのお風呂もいいけど、一人で入るのが精一杯。ウィスキーなら二人で入れるくらい大きくって、しかもワインの樽と同じ値段で売ってくれるという。早速山梨に行って、樽を見に行った。それがまためっちゃカッコいい樽で、いい香りで、もう、大興奮。小松さんといろいろお話して、長野には業者に頼んで送ってもらうことにして、お金を払って、ついにお風呂をゲットした。小松さんは本当に素敵な人で、またぜひ会いたいと思う。家が完成したらお風呂入りに来てくれるといいな。

長野に戻って2週間後くらいに樽が家に届いた。

綺麗に加工されて、樽の部分と切った上の部分を両方が届いて、周囲がウィスキーのいい香りがただよって、わたしは嬉しさで爆発寸前。水も入れて、最初はちょっともれたけど、すぐに木が膨らみ、まったく水漏れしなくなって、想像以上に素敵なお風呂になりそう。早く浴室を完成して、水道工事しなきゃ！！

I knew from the start that I wanted a nice bath for the cabin. Not just any bath, but something special and unique. I thought of traditional Japanese wooden baths, or even drum cans, but as a researched around, I really liked the idea of using a wine barrel. However, I found that wine barrels are hard to find in Japan, and are very expensive, so I was half given up and was pondering other ideas. Late last year, we went to Yamanashi (near Mt. Fuji) and visited a few wineries in the area. I noticed the wineries had a lot of furniture made out of old barrels and asked where they get them. They told me there is an old man who fixes up barrels in the area, and we quickly went to go visit him. Behind a glass factory, was a small section with piles of old barrel pieces and barrels and an old man working alone. We asked him about the possibility of making a barrel into a bath and he said it should work fine and he has made them before. I was so excited I almost jumped out of my skin. I was also worried about the price, especially since this barrel bath would be hand made, but the price was much much much cheaper than any other wood bath I looked into.

Since it was fall, and the cabin building hadn't started yet, we told him that we will contact him again in the spring, and left the site. A few months ago we called him, and he remembered us, and he told us that not only did he have wine barrels, but he also had a few whiskey barrels that would be bigger and make a nicer bath. The price (surprisingly) was the same, so without hesitation we asked for the whiskey barrel, and stopped by his workshop on the way back to Tokyo one weekend. We talked to him for a while, decided on shipping methods, paid for the barrel, and two weeks later it arrived in Nagano. I can't be more happy with how incredibly amazing this barrel looks and what a great bath it will make. It still smells like whiskey, I could get drunk just by taking a bath.

外壁工事　Outer wall construction

何日も切っては塗っての繰り返し後、いざ壁打ち開始！

まずは、壁の一番端っこがまっすぐになり、合板の横から雨が入らないように、長細い板を打ち込んで、ステインを塗った。（実はこの板が細すぎと言うことがあとで判明するんだけど、またあとでもっと太い板を加工して貼ることにする）。

そして、一番下の段は上から合板を貼った時に防水シートが見えないように、ベタッと横に長く色付きの合板を土台に打ち込む。

その上に切った合板を1cmくらいの隙間を入れながら並べて打ち込んでいく。これで一列目終わり。

その上に合板を打てるように胴縁を下地として打ち込む。合板が大体４５ｃｍだから、合板の半分の２２ｃｍところで打ち込んでいくと言うやり方なんだけど、合板をいろんな長さで切ってしまったため、２２ｃｍだとたまに下の防水シートが見えてしまうことが分かり、胴縁は16ｃｍ毎に打ち込むことにした。

そして次の列を打ち込んでいく。

これで2行目終わり。

この作業をひたすら繰り返す。たまに長い合板を入れたり、短いの入れたり、細いの入れたり、幅の広いの入れたり、色々バランスよくしたり、悪くしたりして、とても楽しい作業。下の防水シートが見えないようにだけ、気をつけて、あとは自分の好きなように入れていく。合板の木の質もいろいろだから、同じステインでも色が薄かったり、濃かったり、木の模様があったり、なかったり、とてもおもしろい。

半分終った状態がこれ。

そして、一つの壁の完成がこれ。

想像以上にかっこいい壁ができて大満足。様子を見に来てくれた近所のお友達も“アートだね”っと言ってくれた。断熱材といい、壁といい、私達はパズルアーティスト！？嬉しい限りですね。

あと、この作業にあたって、ものすごい助けになっているのが、エアーガン。コンプレッサーとエアーガンを貸してくれている中村さんに、大大大感謝です！！本当にこの道具がなかったら、気の遠くなるような作業が何倍も大変で途方に暮れるところでした。ありがとうございます！！

After days of cutting up boards and painting and drying, we are finally ready to put up (at least part of ) the outer walls. First, we put in thin and long boards on the edge of the walls so that we can put up the cedar shake type boards in nice and straight and rain won't hit the sides of the boards once they are up. (we later discover that these boards had to be thicker, but we will just all on another thick board later).

Next, we nailed in the bottom board. We put in this board so that when the first layer of cedar shake boards go up, you won't be able to see the paper sheets in between the boards. On top of this bottom board, we nailed in the cedar shake boards, leaving about 1cm between the boards. This will be the first layer of the wall.

On top of the first layer, we hammered in another long and thin board so we have a piece of wood to hammer the cedar shake boards into the wall. We put these long boards in every 16cm (we first thought of doing it every 22cm, which is about half the length of the cedar shake, but since we cut it up pretty randomly, some were too short for 22cm, so we went with 16cm). Then we continue with hammering in the cedar shake boards.

Since each board is different in length and color and even in texture, it was a lot of fun putting up the boards randomly and according to our taste. We thought the more random the better so we put in some long ones, and short ones, thick and skinny, dark and light.

Once all the cedar shake boards were up, the end wall looked really cool, and much more interesting than we had imagined. A friend who stopped by said it looks like an art piece and we were really pleased and proud of ourselves. Daisuke and I just stood back and admired the wall over and over, and couldn't stop complimenting ourselves for our 'artistic' work :)

外壁準備　Outer Wall Prep

外壁には廃材の合板を使う。これもまたTres Homesの鹿島さんがいろいろ提案してきて、最終的に合板を使って、シーダーシェイク風に仕立てることになった。シーダーシェイクは米杉板を瓦調に引き裂いたもの。うちは合板を使うということで、名付けてシーダーフェイク！

まずは合板を４５ｃｍの長さに切っていく。幅はさまざまのほうが面白いから、細いのから太いのいろいろ。長さもちょっとバリエーションがあるといいから、長いのも短いのも作った（短いのはあとで実は使い難いことが分かるけど・・）。
これが切ったあとの写真。結構いっぱい切りましたが、まだまだ、これから沢山作ります。大介が切っている間、私はステインを縫っていく。本当のシーダーシェイクは米杉の色が綺麗で耐水性が強いから、ステインは入らないんだけど、やっぱり合板だから、ステインが色も綺麗にしてくれるし、耐水性を高めてくれる。ステインの色はオークウッド。塗らないほうが木が呼吸するらしいんだけど、塗るメリットのほうが大きかったから、塗ることにした。濃い目の色のほうが、前にあったキャビンぽいし、合板のちょっとした汚れがごまかせると思ったから。

合板を塗るのはとても面白い。ぜんぜん駄目そうな板が、ステインを塗ったらすごく面白い模様が出てきて、色も綺麗に付いたり、逆に良さげな板がステインを吸い込んじゃって、ぜんぜん駄目だったり、縫ってみないと分からない。
数日切っては塗っての繰り返しでこんだけ、完成させることができた。

下の写真のように、外壁を打ち込んでいく予定。さて、外壁のどれくらいができるか楽しみ！

For the outer walls, we will use the wood boards that we used for the floor, but ones that were thrown out at construction sites as garbage. We thought about different methods on what to use and how to make the outer walls, and finally decided on making the walls with these wooden boards with cedar shake style. Since we aren't actually using cedar, we decided to call our method, cedar-fake.

We cut up the boards into about 45cm lengths and made various length widths.　As Daisuke cut up the boards, I painted the boards with oak colored stain. Since we aren't using real cedar, which doesn't need stain because it already has a nice color and is pretty water resistant, we decided to paint the boards. Not painting them may be more ecological, but the boards aren't exactly pretty, and they aren't water resistant so the boards could be susceptible to water damage.

A few days were spent with simply cutting and painting the boards and in the end we had a nice pile. The last picture is how we plan to put together the boards on the wall. The boards we cut up won't be enough to finish all the walls, but we look forward to seeing what it will look like when we put it up.

床の合板　Floor boards

廃材も入って、床作りの第2ステップは根太の上に合板を張っていくこと。下の写真のように、すっぽっと板と板が繋がるようになっているんだけど、これが以外と大きい合板を上手く入れるのが難しい。左の方が入ったと思ったら、右が出てきちゃったり、どこかが引っ掛かって、ちっとも入らなかったり。最初は結構手こずったけど、途中から最初に斜めに入れると結構上手くいく事に気づいて、ちょっとは順調に入るようになった。あとは、気合で叩いて入れるだけ。

合板が入ったら、根太はあるところにインパクトでネジを打ち込んで固定する。

こんな感じでどんどん下の断熱材が見えなくなって、なんかちゃんとした床っぽくなってくる。

2日程かけて引いた合板を張り終わった状態をチェックしに来た監督の愛犬チャウ。

どうやら合格らしい　：）

合板張る前は入りたくても、入るとどこにでも歩き回っちゃうチャウで、

断熱材の下の紙が取れちゃうと困るから、立ち入り禁止にされてたけど、

今は走っても、飛び回っても大丈夫！

キャビンの中で昼寝もできる！昼寝大好き夫婦

最後に一部だけ、合板は打ち込まないで、秘密の地下（？）の入り口を作り事にした。

何かと収納スペースになるかなと思ってます。

大介が頑張って、秘密の地下倉庫の扉枠を作ってくれた。

だんだん大工っぽくなってる？！

After putting in the insulation, we layed down the wooden boards on top of the wooden joists. The top pictures shows how the boards are made to connect perfectly. It was actually kinda difficult to put these together. When hammering in the left side, the right side comes out, or with just one small section not fitting, the whole darn thing doesn't hammer in. After a few boards, we figured out that putting the board in on a slight angle helps put the board in without getting stuck. Still, some of the boards were slightly bent, and in that case, we just had to use force and hammer the board in as best we could.

In the end, we were able to put in the boards quite nicely, and ChowChow, our dog and the director on-site, can now walk around freely in the house. Plus, we can now bring in our sleeping bags and take naps during break time :)

Daisuke also made the frame for a secret door we are going to make to open up into the floor. I thought it would be useful to have access to the open space under the house for storage, since there wont be much storage space in the cabin itself. Daisuke is becoming a better carpenter day by day and it's fun coming up with ideas as we work on the cabin.

床と断熱材　Floor Insulation

シートも貼って、よっぽどの事がない限り、とりあえず雨と風は凌げるようになったので、中の床の作業に取り掛かった。

断熱材はこの前運んできた大量の断熱材の破片（？）と言うか現場で残った細かいピースを使おうという作戦だけど、通常床の断熱材はちゃんと板に一本ずつ打ち込めるような大きさである。私達が使うのはとてもじゃないけど、そんな事はできない。そこで、いつもアイデア豊富なトレスホームズの鹿島さんの提案通り、床の根太と柱の下に防水シートをタッカーで打ち込んで、細かい断熱材の乗せるベッドのような感じに作った。

その上に、床の柱の上に縦に４５ｃｍ毎、根太を入れていった。根太は後で合板を上の乗せる時に必要であり、床を安定させる。その上にパズルみたいに一つ一つの小さい断熱材のピースを上手く埋めていく。

これは時間は掛かるけど、本当にパズルみたいで、とても楽しい。ちょっとした隙間に絶妙な感じに一つのピースが入る時の快感はなんとも言えない。もちろんきっちり入らないことが多いので、隙間に合わせて断熱材を切ったり、最後はグラスウールを千切って詰め込んだりした。

この作業は数日掛かったけど、藤木さん親子も寄って手伝ってくれたり、Kantaがすごく頑張って手伝ってくれたから、順調に作業が進んで、拾って来た断熱材の廃材もほとんど使い切る事ができた。この床の断熱材の完成度は、私達にとってアートのようで、すごく気に入っている。合板で隠れて見えなくなるのが残念。

Now that we have paper walls to keep the wind and rain out, we started work on the floor. Since we got a whole lot of insulation peices from the warehouse, our plan is to peice together all the random peices and make it into the floor. In order to do this, we had to put in the paper sheets we used for the walls under the wooden logs of the floor. This way, we made a bed-like place for all the little peices to rest on.

This was a long and detailed process, but a lot of fun to put together. It really was like doing a gigantic puzzle, and we were able to use peices of insulation of quality that we could otherwise not afford, for free! We were happy that we used up almost all of the insulation 'garbage' and more than anything, we are proud of our floor insulation that we consider a masterpeice, and its too bad that we are going to cover it up with the floor boards later.

防水シート　Paper Tent

久しぶりのアップです。作業は順調に進んでいるのですが、最近翻訳の仕事に追われて（そうなんです、一応少々仕事をしているんです）ブログのアップをする気がなかなか起きませんでした。すみません。

さて、廃材集めで走り回っている時に、長野にあるシンニッセキと言う木材屋さんで防水シートを割安でゲットしました。その防水シートを貼る作業を2日ほど完成させました。特に説明はないのですが、使う道具はタッカーとカッター。とにかくタッカーはいっぱい打ち込むようにする。シートがピシっと貼るのはちょっと大変で、数人で作業するのがベスト。

南の島での生活なら、防水シートを貼るだけでもきっと生きていけると思う。防水、防風、防湿なので、貼り終わってからは家の中がとても快適になり、床ができたら昼寝を家の中でできるような感じになりました。

Please excuse the long break in posts. I have been busy with translation work (yes, unfortunately I am doing some work on the side) and I couldn't bear facing the computer longer than necessary.

So, while collecting materials, we stopped by a lumber store and purchased water and wind resistant paper sheets for a very reasonable price. We spent about 2 days wrapping the cabin with this paper. There is not much explaining to do with this process; just needs a tacker and cutter and lots of staples. It's a bit difficult to put on the sheets without making them all wobbly, so its best to do this process with at least 2 people.

If we were living on a tropical island or desert, our cabin will practically be livable with just these sheets. Its almost like a huge tent, and once the cabin was wrapped in paper, it was very comfortable inside. We look forward to having the floor in so we can take our naps inside our cabin :).

廃材集め　Usable Garbage

窓枠が終ってからの数日,Nさんが屋根をやってくれている間、廃材集めであちこちまわった。まずはお世話になっているトレスホームズの倉庫。ここは廃材の宝の山。ここからは外用のドア２つ、中用のドアも２つ、断熱材いっぱい、グラスウールの断熱材も。あとは古いブルーシート、合板、バケツ、などなど。あと、工事中の現場にも行って、さらに断熱材と合板をゲット。最後に屋根をやってくれた中村さんの倉庫からも断熱材、家具にできそうな木材いろいろ、それ以外にももう使ってないカナヅチとか、ネジとか、ペンキとか、書き切れないほどの宝物をいただいた。本当にみんな沢山のお宝をありがとうございました！！

廃材集めに欠かせないのが、軽トラ。これもトレスホームズのKさんに紹介してもらった、信濃町の山内自動車で８万円でゲット。車検もあと１年残っていて、Hondaのアクティーで、ものすごくお買い得。憧れの軽トラが手に入ってウキウキです。でもマニュアルをほとんど運転したことがないから、最初がガッタンガッタンで車酔いしまくった。廃材集めも手伝ってくれた友達のタイソンが運転の仕方も教えてくれたので、今となってはずいぶんスムーズに運転できるようになった。

ありがとうタイソン!　この時に他にも手伝ってくれたブラッド、ハナちゃん、麻衣子さん、本当にありがとう。またきてね！

After finishing the window frames, we spent a few days running around collecting usable materials that would otherwise be thrown away. First we went to the warehouse of Tres Homes, our contractor. This place is simple overflowing with hidden treasures. We got 2 outdoor doors and 2 indoor doors, wooden boards, insulation boards and glass wool, buckets, etc. We also went to a few constructions sites to get more wooden boards and insulation, and finally went to the storage place of the person who helped will do our roof, Mr. N's storage where we collected all kinds of stuff ranging from nails to paint to wood that we can later make into some killer furniture.

One necessity in collecting usable garbage treasure is a truck. We got a truck for a great deal (about $800) at a local dealer. It is a Honda and this kind of white mini truck is very common in Japan. Its small but very useful and easy and cheap to maintain. We don't have much experience with driving a manual so for the first few days, there was a lot of explosions and engine stalls, but our good friend Tyson, who helped us collect stuff, also gave us instructions on how to drive the manual (without making the passengers sick). Lots of thanks to Tyson, Maiko, Brad and Hana for coming up and helping. Hope you come again soon!

窓枠　Window frames

筋交いを全部打ち終って、次を窓枠を入れていくんだけど、前回書き忘れた一つのステップがあるから、一応ここで写真で紹介します。これは大介のパパが担当してくれたんだけど、全部の柱にカスガイを打っていく。これは柱と土台を繋げるため。いろいろと家を固定させていくのに小さく、大事なステップが重なっていくもの。

そして、窓枠作り。窓が入るところの間柱を、窓が嵌るサイズに測って、切ってから枠を入れていく。もちろんのことだけど、ちゃんと作らないと窓がビシッと入らない。今までの作業は、板が多少短くなりすぎたり、真っ直ぐにならなかったりしても、多少頑張って打ち込めばごまかせたけど（実際ごまかしてるし）さすがに窓が届いて、入らないと困るから、今回はあんまりごまかせない。

まず、窓の大きさ高さはとりあえず一緒にしてるから、一気に線を引くのに墨つぼを使う。墨つぼって職人が使うとビシっと線が入るんだけど、私達がやってもあんまり線が柱に着かなくって、何回もやってるとなんとなく毎回ちょっとずれて、せっかく測ったのに、ぶれちゃって、あんまりうまくいかなかった。とにかくがんばって窓が入る上の部分と下の部分に線を二本ずつ入れる。二本の線の幅は３ｃｍ。そして、丸ノコで５ｍｍの深さで線の上を切っていく。これが丸ノコが重いから結構まっすぐ切るのが大変。かなりの筋トレになる。

切った間の木をノミで掘る。この作業は楽しい。みんなでノミの取り合いになってた。

間柱もちゃんと入れないといけない。間柱はキャビンの壁全部に４５cm間隔で入れていく。これは前回と一緒だけど、窓の上の部分と下の部分を別々に作ってはめ込む。そして、その上の部分と下の部分の間にさっき掘った所に横板（窓枠の長さに合わせて間柱を加工したもの）を通して、全部の間柱と横板をビスで固定する。最終的にこういう感じに仕上がり、ちゃんとできていたら、窓が届く時に綺麗にここに嵌るはず。嵌らなかったどうなるんだろう・・・これがホントのオープンハウス、って感じになるかも。

私達が筋交いとこの作業をしている間、大工さんたち（Fさん親子）はものすごい速さで屋根の準備を進めていく。あっという間に屋根全体にコンパネ（針葉樹合板）が貼られて、ついでに煙突まで作ってくれた。大感謝です。

最後にベランダの骨組みの組み立ての写真をアップし忘れてたので、ここでアップします。ベランダの柱はプレカットじゃないから、Fさん父が加工してくれた。すごい技術だと思います。柱はめっちゃ重いです。Fさんたちがいなかったら、本当に持ち上げるのは無理でした。

Fさん親子は全部で３日間一緒に作業してくれました。その間にキャビンが形になっていき、そして私達もいろいろ教えてもらいました。丸ノコを使うのすら初めての私たちに丁寧に説明してくれて本当に感謝しています。Fさんは私達の師匠だと勝手に思っています。一緒にスズメバチ退治したり、揺れる足場を固定したり、楽しかったです。道具もいっぱい貸していただき、すごく助かっています。本当にありがとうございました。これからもよろしくお願いします！

Before talking windows, the first picture is a step I forgot to mention before. It's basically a big U shaped nail connects the beams and posts. Small steps like this help to make the frame nice and sturdy.

Next we worked on putting in the window frames. Because there are support beams every 45cm, for the areas that we will put in windows, we had to cut the middle of the posts so that the windows will fit. We also had cut into the beams on the side so that the slate of wood for the bottom and top of the window frame will snugly fit into the wall. We used a chisel for this process, which was a popular tool and we all fought for our turn to use it.

The window frame took us about 3 days to finish, and before that, it was the carpenters last day with us. Before they went, we put up the beams for the porch, which I was able to catch few pictures of. This beams are super heavy, and we would never have been able to put up this house if it wasn't for the help of the carpenters. They also put up the bottom boards of the roof with unbelievable speed. Our very special thanks for Mr. F and his son for all their help. Mr. F is an exceptionally skilled carpenter and is Daisuke and my new hero. Not only was he very skillful, he did so much for us in the three days and really taught us a lot. We feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him and his son and hope we can have some sake with them when we finish this cabin :)

骨組が終った後は、足場作りをしなければいけない。屋根屋のNさんが使ってない足場を貸してくれると言ってくれたので、遠慮なくお借りすることにした。

ついでに、余ったヒノキの破材もあるから使っていいと言われて、これもまた遠慮なくもらいました。

まだブログに書いていなかったかもしれないけど、今回のキャビンはなるべく廃材を使って建てようというテーマがある。建築産業からでる廃材の量はかなり半端ない。アメリカではゴミの４０％くらいが建築産業からでるゴミから出るというのも読んだ事がある。廃材といっても、けして使えないものでない。ちょっと傷がついたものとか、木材を切ったあとの残る部分とか、単純に余るもの。全部特に問題ないものだけど、基本的に新築する時はみんな新品がいい訳で、小さく余ったものは使うのに手間が掛かるから使わない。もちろん工務店の人たちもこういうものを捨てるのももったいないと思うから、結構倉庫の中に使われないままおいてある。だから、使ってほしいと言ってくれるし、こっちとしてもすごくありがたい話になる。エコの家を建てるというテーマで考えても、ゴミになる物を使うというのは、だれでもできる事だし、一番無駄と無理がない気もする。

足場を組んだ後は、大工さんたちが屋根の工事を始めて（私も一回屋根に上ったけど、かなり怖かった・・・）私達は筋交いの作業を教えてもらって、それに取り組んだ。写真のように、柱の間に斜めに筋交いを入れていく。これがちょうどはまるように計るには、筋交いを入れる枠の縦と横の高さを測って、その比率で切る角度を決める。

たとえば、２３０cmと８０cmだったら、サジガネ（直角定規）を使って、２３cmと８cmを直角に測って８ｃｍのラインを一直線に書いてから、そのラインの真ん中から、また直角にラインを書く。よく分からない説明になちゃったけど、まー実際にやってみないとこういうのは分からんものだ。

ちょうどフィットする（はず）の筋交いを入れて、ビスで固定したら、筋交いを支える間柱を作る。間柱をキャビンの周りの４５cm単位で入れていくんだけど、筋交いがあるところには、筋交いが邪魔で入れられない。だから、筋交いが間柱を通るところを切らないといけない。これは単純に間柱を一回入るところまでいれて、筋交いにあたるところを鉛筆で線を書く。その線を筋交いの太さ分切って、これもまたちょうどフィットするようになる（はず）。この間柱の真ん中を丸ノコで切るのがなかなか最初は難しかった。あとは、間柱の上の部分が梁や桁に差し込めるように３ｃｍ角の突起状に加工する。

テトリスのようなもんですな。最終的にこんな感じにぜんぶ収まる。

この作業をキャビンの窓や扉が入らない場所全部やるから、３日くらいこの作業に費やした。次の作業は窓枠作り。お楽しみに！

Before moving on with the construction of the walls, we had to put up the footings (not sure what its called officially). This is so we will be able to reach the higher parts of the outer walls as we work. Mr. N, who will be doing our roof kindly let us borrow the parts for the footings and while we were at his warehouse, he also said he has some nice quality wood pieces that can be used for the inside walls. Although they are small pieces, their quality is fine and since he has no use for them, he said we can have it for free. So, of course we piled those in the truck and took it back with us as well.

Although I haven't mentioned it yet, we are trying to use as much recycled material and/or materials that would otherwise be considered garbage. Lots of materials go to waste in the construction business, not because they are unusable, but simply because they have a slight stain or scratch, or are basically just left over from the construction site. And, of course, since most people don't want their house built from left over material and also because its probably more work than its worth for the construction workers to collect and use left over parts, everything is bought new and in bulk. So, the warehouses of these construction companies are filled with usable materials that they feel bad about throwing out since its usable, but also can't use for their new projects. They are happy that we can get it off their hands, and we are super happy since we get materials for dirt cheap or free. I once read that the amount of garbage that comes from the construction business is about 40% of the total garbage produced in a year in the US. So, if we can make use of these materials that will otherwise just be thrown out, it is both ecological and it keeps our purses happy.

After we put up the footings, the carpenters worked on the roof (I went up on the roof once, and it was quite scary so we will leave that to the professionals) and they taught us how to make the rest of the walls. Like I mentioned before, we are using Japanese style building methods, and with this style, we put in wooden post sideways to fit exactly between the posts to strengthen the walls. Once one goes in sideways, we also put another post in the middle (this kind of post will go up every 45cm of the walls), so the sideways post is now in the way, so we have to measure and cut the middle of the rod, so the sideways one once again fits exactly inside the middle rod. Its kinda hard to explain, but the pictures should make it clearer. The top of the middle rod is cut into a 3cm square and this fits exactly in a hole that was made earlier on top. Technically, everything is supposed to fit snugly together so in the past they didn't have to use nails. We are not quite as skillful so we hammered in nails after we put everything up, just for extra support. We had to do this process for every 45cm all around the walls, except for where the windows and doors will go. Since we are sloooowwww, (especially since we were still just getting a hang of the circular saw) this step took us about 2-3 days to complete.

キャビン作りは日に日に進んでいるけど、今日は工事に使っている道具の紹介をしようと思います。まずは丸ノコとゼットソー。

丸ノコがあれば、大抵の事はできます。着こなしのポイントはいかに重さを感じさせずに片手で扱うかです。間違ってもカットするライン上に体を置いてはいけません。ゼットソーはその名の通り刃の部分がZになっている鋸です。

次に紹介するのは墨つぼ。これ一つあればまっすぐな線を引くことに困ることはありません。

お次は角度を演出するアイテム二点。これだけで持っていると切ない感じになります。

沢山ビスを打つ場合の必需品、インパクトドライバー。これがないとすべてのネジを締めるのにに数年かかってしまいます。

次はノミ & ハンマー。ノミは窓枠や間柱を差し込むための隙間を作るのに使います。ハンマーは釘を打ったり、加工した木材を組んだり、その他力ずくでなんやかんや押し込んだりするときに使います。蜂を追い払うために振り回したりもできます。絶対に必要な一品です。腰に下げているだけでおしゃれ度アップ！

こちらはDekai丸ノコ (正式名称不明)。持ち運びはできませんが、まっすぐに切ったり、角度をつけて切ったり、安定して使えます。

他にも色々使うけど、作業中はこんな感じに軽いものはベルトに着けてます。袋の中には釘がわんさかです。

最後に弟のジミー君が作った作業台。丸ノコを使う際の必需品。作業台に向かうときは常に笑顔を絶やさず。大工さんなんかはこんなの使わず、至る所で丸ノコ振り回してるけどね (笑)。

こんな感じで色々な道具を駆使して、毎日コツコツと作業を進めてます。次回はさらに進んだ骨組みをアップするので、期待して待っててね！

Today we will quickly introduce the tools we are using. It's really quite self explanatory, basic tools like the circular saw, impact driver, hammer, chisel, and measuring tools all demonstrated in the pictures above on how NOT to use them. The large monster saw was left behind by the friendly carpenters for us to borrow and Jimmy (my little brother) built a sawhorse.

さて、この数日キャビンの骨組みを組み立てる作業を始めた訳なんですが、毎日やることがいっぱいで、夜にはくたくたに疲れて、ブログどころではない感じです。正直今も筋肉ヘトヘト、まぶたが重いで早く寝たいけど、あまりにもアップしなければいけないことがいっぱいになってきたので、がんばります！

まず、基礎工事が終って、土台も完成して、骨組を組み立てていくんですが、今回はプレカットの木材をオーダーしたので、プラモデルのように届いた木材を組み立てるという体力は必要だけど、作業としては技術はそんなに必要じゃない事から始まります。

材料はこういう風にカットされた状態で届いて、それを順番に建てたり、重ねたりする。

技術があれば、プレカットじゃなくって、ちゃんと柱とか骨組みも自分たちで作ってみたいと思ったけど、技術もまったくないし、初めて丸ノコを使うと言う私達が片っ端から柱作りはさすがに難しすぎるだろうと判断した。ちなみに‘１００万円の家作り’と言う本には、こういう柱を切ったり骨組みの作り方など載っていて、お勧めだけど、やはりまったくの素人である私達にはハードルが高すぎる。

いくらプレカットでプラモデルみたいに組み立てればいいと言っても、それでもわからないことばかり。そのため、Tres Homesを通して数日手伝ってくれる大工さんが来てくれた。この大工さんたちと一緒に作業をして、ちゃんとした物を建てると言うのと、経験と勉強のためいろいろ教えてもらうという作戦である。

そして、始まった骨組の作業。それが大工さんの腕も良くって、仕事が早くって、あっと言う間に骨組が終ってしまった。おかげで、写真は撮りそこねたけど、一日目の作業でこんなにもキャビンが形になった。

基礎と土台作りの時は以外と小さく感じたキャビンが、いきなりとても高く、大きく見えて、ちょいとびびった。そして、家が家らしくなっていくその過程の速さにも驚かされる。骨組が終ってからの写真がこれです。

These last few days have been super busy and super productive, and I am tired to the bone. There is so much we did and so much to put up on the blog, but all I want to do is tucker up into bed. But, although my muscles ache, if I get any more behind on this blog, I know I will never catch up, so here is a quick update :)

First, we came back to Nagano and the foundation was complete. The next few days we will be working on the frame of the cabin. We ordered pre-cut wood for this cabin which means that all the materials for the frame will come and all we have to do is put them together like a puzzle. We are building with old-style Japanese architectural techniques and not by 2x4. 2x4 is supposed to be easier, since in a nutshell you make the walls and them lunge them up and add and roof and you are done. Japanese style building involved cutting the tops and bottoms of the wooden logs so that they piece together like a puzzle. Technically speaking no screws and bolts are required, but we (and most all modern buildings) will add screws and bolts for extra support.

Since we are complete amateurs (its our first time to use a circular saw...), we came to the conclusion that cutting out all the parts on our own was too much to handle from the start. But we wanted to experience the Japanese style building method since there is probably a lot we can learn from it. So, we decided that we would pre-order the wood (as most builders do now) this time. Hopefully, someday we can do this step on our own :)

We hired a couple carpenters through Tres Homes (our contractor) to help us out for the first few days of work so we are not completely lost in the process. They will help us out while we build for frame of the cabin, and we will try to learn as much as we can from them until we are left to work on our own.

The first day went by so quickly and so much got done, that I missed out on a chance to take pictures, but the picture shows how much of the framework went up with one days work. No wonder everyone uses pre-cut... can't beat modern technology and convenience. We were surprised at how quickly things went, but also at the size of the cabin. It felt small while we made the foundation, but now it seems tall and quite large. I guess we have a lot of work ahead of us!

土台を作る最後の日ははセメントを入れる型の外枠をする作業に取り掛かった。内枠はしっかり固定してあるため、結構外枠の建てつけは簡単にできた。しかも人数が多かったため、かなり早く作業は終わった。最後にYさんが細かい調整をして、やっと型が終わった。

午後からはセメントのトラックとクレーン車が来た。しかもドでかいクレーン車。

まさかこんなでかい物がくるとは思っていなかった。なんかUFOみたいな容器にセメントを入れて、クレーン車で運んで、土台の型で流し入れて行くという作業だ。こんな巨大なクレーン車とかがきて、大掛かりにセメントを運んでいるのを私達はただ安全な所で観察していたけど、さすがに、これのどこがDIYだろう、っとちょっと心の中で思ってしまった。でもここで言い訳をするみたいだけど(実際そうだけど）ちゃんと土台はプロにやってもらうには理由がある。ひとつはもちろん土台は適切に作らないと家全体がゆがんでしまう。多少ゆがんでもいいと思うけど、やっぱり水道工事とかあとで数ミリのずれがあると困る事になるらしいし、窓のサッシを入れたりする時も土台が曲がってると全部曲がった状態で計らないといけなくなる。もうひとつの理由は、今回作ったような全体的にセメントの壁を作るしっかりした土台はもともと作ろうを計画していなかった。この辺りのキャビンを全部そうなんだけど、束石(ツカイシ)の上に木の柱をのせて、家の下が空くような土台はもっと簡単でできるし、材料費もかからないから、安く済む。でもこういう土台は今では（長野では？）建築法で認められていないようで、できないということになってしまった。地震が多い日本には建築法が厳しいのは分かるけど、この辺のキャビンはかなりぼろぼろの土台で建っているいるのに、地震で崩れたキャビンはない。キャビンは犬が耳を掻くくらいで揺れるけど、そんなに問題ないように思える。まー、許可が下りなければ仕方がなかったし、土台がしっかりしていることにこしたことはない。

クレーン車が運んでくるセメントを３人の職人さんたちでそのセメントを型に流し込んでいく。流し込んだセメントをなんか掃除機みたいな道具でセメントが満遍なく流れるように、空気を抜いていく。流し込んでは、クレーン車がさらに運ぶ。この作業を繰り返す。

残念ながら、あたしたちはその日作業が終るまで立会いができなかったけど、この作業が終って、２－３日セメントを乾かしたら、Yさんと私達が時間をかけて作った型を数人が一気にはずして、土台は完成する。

この作業に掛かった日数は１０日(休日を除く)。石田さん、Mさん、Yさん、Nさん、セメントのおじ様、そして他にも助けてくれた職人さんたち、みんなありがとうございました！そして、土台と畑を手伝いに来てくれてJimmy, AiとAyako、手伝いにきてくれて、嬉しかった。また来てね。

土台作りに邪魔だっただろう私たちに丁寧にいろいろ教えてもらって、作業に参加させてもらって、本当にありがたかったです。土台がしっかりしているから、キャビンもしっかり作らないと！

After finishing the inside wall of the mold, we worked on the outer. Since the inside is already sturdy, and we had a few extra hands to help out, the outer wall went up quickly. After Mr. Y made the final adjustments, the mold was finished and ready for cement pouring. That afternoon, the cement truck came, and so did a gianormous crane truck. The crane truck carried the cement pouring into the UFO shaped container to where the cement will be poured into the wall. Daisuke and I just stood back and watched from a safe location as these huge trucks did their work. Watching these trucks, somewhere inside we couldn't help but think, 'what is DIY about this?' I had not expected such huge trucks to be involved in this process. If, however, I am allowed to give a few excuses for this un-DIYness, there are a couple. First, we originally wanted to do a more simple foundation. The cabins around here were all built a while ago, and the foundation is simply wooden stalls on cement blocks so the bottom of the foundation is open (good for storing wood). The article I found on Mother Earth news about a simple cabin also had this kind of foundation. It's more simple and costs less since it doesn't require so much cement and work. However, since Japan is an earthquake prone country, and also a very overly careful and strict country, the local building regulations do not allow this kind of foundation for new buildings. It's true that the cabins here shake with simply the dog scraching her ear (and she is a small dog too), but none of the cabins here have collapsed because of an earthquake (and there was a big one around here a few years ago). So, although I think the simple foundation would have sufficed, there is no getting around local regulations, so we accepted that we have to invest in the foundation. The second reason is more obvious and is that we are complete amatuers and we were going to get professional help to do the foundation anyway. It would

have been nice to do the simple foundation with professionals as a learning experience for future projects, but I guess that can't be helped. The foundation, of course, is the base of the house and a slight unbalance would mean a crooked house, and difficulity in putting in everything from plumbing to windows later on. Although we don't have plans to learn how to operate a monster crane truck in the future, this process was definetely interesting and a learning experience for us.

We couldn't stay for the whole process of pouring in the cement, but after pouring the cement and evenly spreading it out and making sure there is no air inside, the cement was will be left to dry for 2-3 days and then a few people will come and take off the mold and the foundation will be complete. The foundation process took about 10 days total (excluding holidays). We would like to thank Mr. Ishida, Mr. M, Mr.Y and all the other workers for all their hard work and patience with working with us. Also, thank you Jimmy, Ai and Ayako for coming up and lending a helping hand, we hope to have you come over again soon:).

Now that we have a beautiful and strong foundation, we can look forward to building our wonderful cabin!!

セメントも天気がいいからすぐに乾いて、次の日からは土台の壁になるところの型を作り続けた。

鉄筋の部分に前日大介がマスターしたワイヤーでグルグル技で、コンクリートを入れた時に頑丈になるため、さらに鉄筋をクロスして繋げていった。言葉では説明しにくいから写真をどうぞ。

その後は型の外枠になる板が届いて、それの手入れをした。前に使われた時に空いた穴にプラスチックの部品をカナヅチで打ち込んで埋めていった。

この板を鉄筋フェンスの周りに沿って型を作っていく。この作業は細かく図ったり、まっすぐしたりといろいろと細かい作業で、やっぱりあとでセメントが入る型な訳で

すから、プロの手と判断が必要で、時間をかけてYさんが数日にわたって作業をしてくれた。

内側の枠が終わったら、先日私たちは繋げたプラスチック（コンクリの壁の中に入るやつ）と壁を頑丈にするための鉄棒を当てるパーツを木の板に穴を開けて、繋げていった。

この作業は友達のAちゃんに手伝ってくれて、彼女が一番インパクトドライバーを使いこなしていた。お見事でしたよ、Aちゃん！

最終的に内側の壁を全部固定したあとはこんな感じになった。

これがかなり頑丈で縦のパイプと横のパイプと板でがっちり固定する事で、壁の線がピキ！とまっすぐになって、コンクリの型が出来上がってくる。最後にまっすぐになるのは、やっぱりYさんの地道な作業のおかげ。ありがとうございました！

The cement dried and hardened quickly thanks to great weather and we continued to work on making the mold for the foundation. We added more steel rods to the existing ones with the wire wrapping technique that Daisuke mastered a few days back. We created a fence like shape with the steel rods to where the foundation's cement walls will go up; this will help the walls be more sturdy. After that they brought in wood boards that will be used to create the inner and outer mold. We hammered in little plastic peices into the holes of the boards so the concrete won't sweep out later. After that, the task of putting up the walls were mostly done by the Mr. Y, since it requires accurate measuring (we dont want slanted cement walls, or we will have a slanted cabin). The next couple days were spent with Mr. Y doing a lot of measuring and adjusting, and after the inner walls were up, we were able to help out with toughening up the walls by screwing in the inner medal peices (that we put together earlier) and putting up steel pipes and wooden sticks along to walls. This made a big difference and after all the support was up, the mold walls were as straight as the strings were put up initially. All thanks for Mr. Y's detailed work. We can actually see how high the foundation will be, and its become easier to visualize the cabin day be day.

次の日は生セメントトラックが来て、一輪で生コンを運んで鉄筋を刺したところにドバン落としていった。これが、運ぶのはいいんだけど、下ろす時が重くって、ちょっと凹んでいるところで一輪ごと落とさないようにしても、重くって、ドッシャーンっと何回か鉄筋に突撃してしまった。おかげで、運び終わったらころには何個の鉄筋が曲がってしまってた。特に問題にならないみたいだったけど（なにも言われなかったから・・・呆れてるだけだったかもしれないけど・・）。

生コンを運んだあと、鉄筋の周りにきれいに引いていった。この時のコツはセメントを力入れて押さないで、優しく撫でるように平らにしていくと石田さんが教えてくれた。優しく撫でてくうちに凸凹の表面も綺麗な平らになり、意外とちゃんとした出来上がりになった。

この日は弟も手伝ってくれて、石田さんも応援にきてくれたので結構あっと言う間に作業が進んだ。しょうもない素人でも人数がいれば、案外ちゃんとできるもんだな、と石田さんも言ってくれて、私たちもとてもうれしかった。

午後は今後土台の壁になる部分に使うパーツを繋げる作業をした。これからは土台の壁用の型を作っていくらしい。その型の外枠の板を二つ繋げるパーツで、白い部分の外に板を打って、その中に生コンを埋めていく。楽しみだ。

We continued work on the foundation today. A cement truck came in the morning and we carried the cement from the truck to where we layed the steel rods using a wheelbarrel. Its not so hard pushing the wheelbarrel, but when dumping the cement to the desired location, there were areas that there was a sudden hill, and it the wheelbarrel was so heavy that it was difficult to keep it from falling into the steel rods. By the time we finished, quite of few of the steel rods had fallen victim to our clumsiness. But it didnt seem to be a big problem, and we were able to bend most of them back into place.

After carrying all the cement, we spread out the cement between the rods. The key here, we were told, was to not press down on the cement, but gently spread it by moving the spreading tool back and forth. Eventually the rough surface becomes nice and smooth. My little brother helped out today so we had many hands working. Mr. Ishida was impressed that even though we are all hopeless amatures, if all of us work together, the end result is not so bad. In the end, we put together parts for the mold that we will make to build the cement walls for the foundation. More to look forward to :)
